Is this from Religion...if so i think that this thread will be moved to another section...if it isn´t, of what it is ???
Yes. This is about religion and should be moved. In that venue, much could be learned. I have long been interested in the science of Kosher cooking, for instance. That is really the proper place for this discussion.
So the happy jewish new year thread can stay but the Ramadan thread has to go? Can you say hypocrite?
In that case, any thread in Gen OT wishing people a merry Xmas should go too. I am all for a ban on religion in the general section, but it should be enforced without a double-standard. On the other hand, come to think of it, if we're allowing simple religious wishing to go on here, simple irreligious wishes should be allowed too. I must remember to wish all non-believers a very happy Atheists' Day when the time comes (it's April 13th).
WADR. I think you gentleman have it a bit off target. Ramadan is a religious event as well as a cultural one. It is, however, mostly a religious one. In that regard we should discuss it in that venue, R&P. Discuss it, not quash it. There is nothing wrong with Ramadan IMHO. Understanding Ramadan is a worthy effort. The Jewish New Year is simply the result of a different calendar and is a cultural event, just as traditional western New Years is. Religious implications, if any, vary widely. We pay for our venues on this forum and should take advantage of it. That is what I said, and that is what I meant. No more. No less.
I'm afraid it is you, sir, who have it a little askew. Both Ramadan and Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) are religious *and* cultural events. Both are celebrations based on their respective calendars. The Muslims venerate the month of Ramadan over their new year, so the observance of Ramadan is as important as New Years celebrations for many other cultures. I noticed you posted in the Jewish NY thread with some rather awkward rationalisations separating the religious/cultural aspects, etc. etc. Rosh Hashanah is not without religious ritual - the blowing of the shofar, for instance. There is no sense in trying to separate the religious and cultural aspects of these festivals. The standard should be applied fairly. Either we get to see posts wishing happy Rosh Hashanah, merry Xmas, happy Diwali and a happy Ramadan out here in the general area, *or* they're all relegated to P & R. You can't have it both ways.
