Defroster vent removal ?

I'm repairing a few sticky items in my car and the removal of most everything is straight forward except for the defroster vents on the top of the dash. I've done a search where someone else asked the question but the only answer given was how to remove the a/c vents. Any help would great.

 

90-degree screwdriver. Do you have the little fascia/tabs covering the three screws? Pop them off, and you'll see the mounting screws.

 

Thanks Daniel, I do have the tabs or screw covers. I've seen other cars with just the screws exposed so I wasn't sure if I had covers or a later series vent perhaps. I didn't want to go at it too hard and break something expensive without asking.

As for the in-dash ones, they just pop out don't they?

 

The defroster vent surrounds are made of cast aluminum, so if you really want the "brushed aluminum" look, all you have to do is strip them and go over them with a Scotch-brite, but I think they will reflect pretty badly in the windshield if they aren't black.

They are removed with three screws with 3mm allen heads, and the screws are way longer than necessary, about 1 1/4" long, so they take quite a bit of twisting in a confined space.

Personally, to remove the black "glop", I just go to the laundry room sink and use Boraxo on it. Very easy, no smell, I just rub it on by hand and rinse it off.

Yes, the in-dash ones are just held in place with tabs.

I would be careful about a shiny finish on the vents. In my case, I took the door levers off when they got sticky and had them chromed with a brush finish. I like the way they look and it makes it easier for passengers to find the handle, but there is a glare in the side window on a sunny day.

I got used to it after a while, but that's in the side window. A glare on the windshield may be a totally different matter.
