Driving my car in the very early cool morning and suddenly both the speedometer and odometer quit. I just need a pic and location of the sender or whatever controls both. Might need cleaning or something came loose as some have suggested on prior posts. Hope its not a chip problem. I have an '81 308 GTSi.

It's behind the passenger rear wheel. You can get to it on your back to check the wires. If it needs replacing, you'll need to jack the corner just to be able to work the wrench. It's a do-it-yourself job in the driveway.

The sender can fault....the dash unit can fault...or you can have a short in the wiring at the harness clamps.......good hunting!

OTOH, is it stuck on a lucky number???????? :D :D :D

99% of the time it is the sender, order a new one and swap it would, you should be fine. :)

Ok, mine reads 5 mph faster and It's confirmed after testing it a few times.
Should I change my speedo sensor?

Nope. They are almost always reading high like this. My 328, 330 (BMW) and X5 all read about 8% high.

I don't think the sensor has anything to do with accuracy so changing it probably would not help. It just sends pulses to the speedometer and associated electronics. That may be where you can make some adjustment/calibration. In any event, in many countries a speedometer is permitted to read fast (maybe as much as 10%) but must never read low (for legal reasons... speeding tickets etc.) so they err on the optimistic side just to be safe. Fords, at least in Europe, used to have a reputation for having quite "optimistic" speedometers. There's the feel good factor too when people think their car can go a bit faster than it really can.

The production change in the different style of senders was sometime around September 1981.

Your speedometer and odometer were reading fast or not working?

They were not working at all. For a time they worked occasionally and then just quit.

I bought the pick up and had a friend install it. All better now.

I think mine just screwed into the top of the transmission.

I didn't know about this but suspected it... that explains why I'm always looking into the grille of the SUV behind me when I'm going through known speed trap areas!

Anybody know where I can get a sender at a reasonable price for my '81 308?

    It's easy to measure, really.

Either take a GPS unit and see

or drive a steady speed and time one mile. If that takes X seconds, then your speed is 3600/X mph

My GT4 reads about correct up to 100 kph. Above that, it will read about 10 kph optimistic up to 160 kph. Above that, it'll be around 20 kph optimistic.

    Bigdreamer,

Dennis Mccann Ferrari Parts. Dennis is a real down to earth honest guy. The sender will cost you $195 (I just bought one too). It stings but I can't find it cheaper anywhere else. He will have it to you in just a couple of days.

Wow, Bob, really? I'm surprised they have gone up that much...I bought one for my 78 308GTS and it was only about $115 from TRutlands, but this was 6 years ago. I bought one for my 355 from Ricambi last year and it was only $125.

Okay, did a search wtih Fchat sponsor Ricambi, they have gone up quite a bit, but a little less than Dennis McCann:

    Early style is $175 http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=213529

    Later style is $158 http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=193699

I think it's more a question of the Dollar going down rather than the price of the parts going up. Of course at the end of the day the it's the same difference for those paying in Dollars.

MY speedometer and tachometer isn't working at all and after reading several postings I'm going to start with the sender. I noticed that mine must have been an after market one since the connections were different. I've cleaned everything first (very dirty on the connections including connector plugs not shown) but didn't help. Before I remove it I want to make sure I have a replacement available or at least know where I can get one. Anybody have a part number or where to buy besides eBay (the two that are available are either for the other location or for an earlier model)? The prices have definitely gone up since last posting...
