As much as the neighbor has complete control over his own property, it can never hurt to simply ask "would you mind not destroying my view?". He can say no obviously, but if he is a nice enough guy, he'll say yes like he did.

BTW, what part of the west hills is so undeveloped? Are you really far down skyline or something?

Yes, we live at the tail end of Skyline, near Rocky Point Road... some of the best driving in the PDX area. :)

BUMP because...HOLY FISHSTICKS did the plot just thicken! CHECK THIS OUT!!!

I got a phone call tonight from a very cool female friend that I met through my wife... she's a medical parts rep who sells spinal surgery bits and pieces, and we know her from when my wife worked in a neurosurgery clinic (wife's an NP). She wanted to have drinks at a bar near us, so we met her at ~8. Had some pub grub, and put back a few Terminator Stouts (at the Rock Creek Tavern for the locals) and wrapped up around 10:30 or so. Check came, tossed my card on it, got it back, and was about to get up and leave, when our friend said "Hey... I have a surprise for you guys, but you have to wait about 20 minutes to get it..." So we ordered another round, and relaxed, wondering who or what would be joining us...

20 minutes later, in walks the best neurosurgeon of the group my wife used to work for. Way cool dude who we've partied hard with on numerous occasions, has a sweet custom Titan motorcycle, and a sort of local celeb in the medical world because of his talent. Sits down with us and orders a drink, and tells us he wants to invite us over to his new place... little blue farmhouse with a six acre lake... suddenly, this is all sounding too familiar...

OUR NEUROSURGEON BUDDY BOUGHT THE PROPERTY NEXT TO US, GUARANTEED US PERMANENT ACCESS AND PROMISED UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS IN PERPETUITY AND EXPECTS TO HOLD THE PROPERTY FOR ~30 YEARS!!!

I couldn't believe it... my wife was literally in tears (of relief) and we all had quite a laugh at how well they had kept the secret from us. I really didn't believe him until he knew the current owner's last name, and some details that he couldn't have known unless it was true, so all's well that ends well!

Our access, and view of the lake is now guaranteed, we have a way cool (and rather wealthy) neighbor (who wants to put in 5 to 10 acres of wine grapes!) who even mentioned wanting to buy a garage somewhere to put toys in, inviting me to do the same (been holding off on an NSX/911 purchase until space allowed, since we live down a gravel road). Needless to say I am relieved and excited all at once... he moves in on Monday!

Just thought I'd share the exciting plot twist and news...

    Ha! That's nice!

Did they buy the property just because of you situation? Or was it just coincidence?

He had apparently looked at the property before he knew we owned next door, but came to a party at our place ~3 months ago which cemented the deal for him. He didn't want to say anything until the deal had finalized, and I've been out of town for the last few weeks. It wasn't specifically because of our situation, but certainly resolves it in about the best way possible.

Those must have been some sweet tears your bride shed and I can only imagine the elation in that Tavern.

    - it's a bit of an oddity, but, once you "get it" - oh, do you enjoy the most personal "view" Pere Ubu's frontman has shared, and can find it as compelling as the view you all will not just protect, but even improve upon.

    All's well that ends well.
