I am looking at replacing the big end locking nuts (Part #104011) while my engine is being rebuilt. But they are very expensive!!! From Ferrari and Eurospares they cost 10.80 pounds = $22 USD each! Dennis has them for $25 each and Ricambi $38 each. If I get them from Ferrari, 16 of the little buggers works out to $352 (+ delivery)!!! Ouch!!! 8( I am going to try a nuts and bolts place for a set and need to know the specs of them. They are listed as - SELF LOCKING ROD NUT 10X1X10MM. So - M10, 1 pitch, 10mm height. Does anyone know what type of lock nut it is? What grade of metal? I am also doing the CV joints and replacing all nuts (101633) and bolts (101632). The bolts I can find but I also need to find the correct locking nuts. Listed as - HALF SHAFT SELF LOCKING NUT 10X1.25X65. Again - M10, 1.25 pitch, 65? (I assume 6.5 height? the bolts are 65 in length). What type of lock nuts are they? And grade of metal? Thanks!
Well, since no one else seems to want to tell you: The price you paid for your car is merely the cost of membership into "The Club". The real cost of your car will be the cost of maintenance. And that includes the parts and the price you pay for those parts. Welcome to the joys of Ferrari ownership Grant! PS: If you fill out your profile and post a picture of your car, people will generally take more interest in what you post. Paying the small price for a subscription is even better! Fixing your car with funky parts will also diminish it's value. (IMHO of course) It will also give DStacy the whibbily's (which might be fun to watch) and cause a few others to gasp so hard they'll suck the color right out of their collective flat-screen monitor's, leaving them nothing to look at except pictures of Ferrari's in black-and-white... But what the heck! At least it'll get rid of all that RED! And after all, it's your car, right? Have fun! Welcome to FChat!!!
But what a "club" to be a memeber of!!! Well worth the membership fee!!! Giddy-up!!! Seriously however I can't comprehend spending over $400 (aussie) for 16 nuts!!! That's just crazy. What are they, platinum??? Now that would be funky! Not sure of the torque rating on them %) In the end if that's what they cost then that is what they cost. I won't skimp on the car. It's just that I am sure Ferrari haven't had a special composite and locking mechanism developed for their con-rod nuts. Cheers!
at least in this "club" you can remove the big end rod cap.....if you belonged to the 1920's bugatti "club" you would have to ship your entire crank assembly to the UK for re-rollering. 20++ K us dollars..+ a long wait...count your blessings.
If it makes you feel any better I was quoted $42 each for Aston Martin lugnuts. Even the parts guy was aghast. You must take the part with you to an industrial supply house, they might have the part at lower cost. Since it's an engine part, an auto parts store might help. Make sure they know where it's going so they give you the correct strength/quality.
Yes strength and quality are my main concerns. It's quite easy to get same size and thread however it needs to be able to handle the load it is placed under. It's not something you want to let go!!! That would make $400 seem like chicken feed! What do others do? Use the old nuts? Or buy new ones from Ferrari?
No. Not crazy. Just nutz!!! And just think how excited you'll be to have a box like this sitting at your front door when you get home!!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
And what's inside? Goodies of course! Tools to play with... And yes... If you're doing the ones on the gearbox, you really do need them. Unless you can borrow one. They're about $100 (USD) each. bawahahahaha Thanks David, I'm fighting some health issues and have been feeling pretty low for a while...I needed a good laugh today. Thanks again
For the last forty years I have been picking up odd bits from petrochemical refineries, construction jobsites, NASA, Rice University Space Science and Nanotechnology Labs......places like that. When I need to fix something on my Fcars, I just go into my shop and look in the nut and bolt drawers. I find something "close enough' and just cross thread them right on down the stud.......sometimes you need a piece of pipe as a cheater bar.... HTH Coming out to Franco's Party Sunday, dsatcy? Rumor has it the FCA Outcasts will be well represented there.....
When I rebuilt my 400 engine I found the same as you, and was similarly horrified. I did some checking and found these were the same as on a 308. I bought the nuts from Superformance in the UK. They are just under £5 each (AU$12). Still not cheap but cheap enough to justify the buying the right ones (they were identical to the originals). I also bought piston rings and many other parts which I eventually cross-referenced using the parts manuals. See http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-308/eg.htm I checked all the usual nut & bolt suppliers and no could match the original design Simon
According to one particular, know-it-all, self-appointed, "expert" engineer here on F-chat, you don't need to use locking fasteners on the rod ends as he claims, Ferrari never did! So, I suppose you can just pick up a 'bag-o-metric nuts' at your local hardware store and put them puppies on...! And, of course I know Tex is joking, and of course I am not referring to him...
The Ferrari rod nuts that you get today are poor quality, they are a non locking castleated nut to match the poor quality of the rod bolt. We do/did have a good 12 point ARP nut @ $12.00 ea. for the factory bolts but are currently out of stock. We also have an ARP bolt w/ 12 point nut available for $25.70 ea.. Still a lot of money but a better quality option. BTW - I have never seen a single factory rod fastener fail, despite the poor quality, that was not induced by another problem.
Surely replacing the bolts would be more important as it is the bolt that is stretched as the fitting is torqued? It is thus this stretch that provides the right clamping force and it is this stretch that if weak may allow movement and eventual failure ... Pete
