    thanx. who pays retail? ;-) i've got an aftermarket aluminum rad and am planning the latest a/c upgrade discussed in another thread. these fans along with a bigger condensor seems like a good place to start.

    I put my fans back on and now they are quiet as a church mouse. If it weren't for the one grommet disintegrating (which is probably no big deal either) I would be happy.

    In agree with Big Tex about replacing with OEM... even though there are "better" options... must be lunacy driving me to look for a Lucas replacement motor! :):)

    I finally did it I replaced my oe fans with the Hayden 3680 12" fans. It made a big difference on the water temp gauge. I read all the posts and followed all the information and it was an easy installation with the results I needed. Now I feel very confident about even driving in stop and go traffic.

    I replaced the 2 stock fans with 1 large aftermarket push fan. Works great.

    I went with two Spals on my 328. They move A LOT more air than the original fans. Noisier too but I can live with that.

    I am finished with this little project and ended up with a blended solution. I did not chose replacements from our well known providers as they appeared jap and cost at minimum $250 per fan.

    The modern electrics probably do push more air but I didn't choose them because I wanted to the closest thing to the originals as possible.

    I set out following the "refurbish" path as mentioned earlier in this thread. Very good idea to measure orientation of the fans to the condensor and their rubber insulating strap. Not a big deal but when re-installing you don't have to think at all about where the fans go etc. They are relatively easy to take apart. My brushes seemed to me in good shape but I still had it confirmed by an EE friend at work. A little 3-in-1 oil around the shaft at the top and at the base took care of the squeal. So, I can confirm the refurbish idea works.

    Unfortunately, the rectangular grommet on the right fan disintegrated during this process. Probably a good sign these fans have seen their day. So I went after the Lucas replacement for that fan. Took me a few calls to find it. The Lucas part number is 78497, the same fan as used in the '74 Jag Series III XKE. Welsh Enterprises (800.875.5247) had it for $135.95. It is an exact match to the fan in my 308 and fits perfectly with the existing blade. Only hitch was the Jag version had a butt-style connector for the positive line that I hacked to a blade connector to match the 308. Plugged it in and works great. I think it would be hard to wire it up backwards but doesn't hurt to verify at the end that it is pushing and not pulling air. Attached are a couple pictures of the old fan, its innards, and the new fan installed.

    Not shure I understand which part you are talking about that disintegrated requiring a new fan? You don't mean the electrical grommet do you? Any plans on selling the old fan motor?

    Yes, probably a bit overboard to replace it over just that electrical grommet but in the limited searching I did I decided I couldn't properly fix it. Do I drive around in the rain that much? Not really. Would it matter anyway? Probably not.

    If anyone is interested in the old fan send me a PM.
