A memorial service for Colin McRae and his son was held this afternoon here in the little country town of Lanark in Scotland where Colin was born and brought up and where, despite his fame and wealth, he chose to live and raise his own family.

The service was held in the church in the town’s main street over the door of which is a statue of William Wallace who lived here for a period. That seemed fitting as Colin was undoubtedly another Scot in the ‘Braveheart’ mould.

The main street was closed off to traffic early in the afternoon as thousands of local people and others from all parts of the world, gathered to pay their respects. Large screens showed highlights from Colin’s career and family video in the hour or so leading up to the service and then relayed the service to the crowd outside. Amongst the speakers at the service were David Richards and Ari Vatanen and David Coulthard contributed via video. It was a moving service and Ari Vatanen’s words were particularly relevant and poignant. I hope some of it is broadcast so you all have a chance to see it.

It has been a sad couple of weeks but today’s events were uplifting and will, I’m sure, bring comfort to the families in the coming months.
