Thanks for sharing these terrific pics, what great fun for me, I am still smiling and chuckling.

I made a trip from Berlin to Monaco over the course of several days in a very old split-window VW bug with a fellow Yank I met in Berlin. We rode together all the way to Rome in December of 1963. Where were you in 1963? The shot of the silver car exiting the round-about in front of the casino was especially good. I stood on the same spot in 1963 to get a pic of the park in front of the casino, but there were no Ferraris, just a Citeoen 2CV, a Merc and a German Ford. I also liked your shots of the Monaco harbor, it does not seem that the place has changed since I was there in '63, spectacular. I can see the Palace and the Oceanographic Museum, things have not changed in 44 years. Thanks for sharing, this was very special. Nicely done. Thanks very much.

    Hi Ed

thank you for the feedback on the thread, your trip sounded great too! What is interesting about your recollections is that it's easy to forget that Monaco was still well known back then, and even before, in motorsport terms. The Monte-carlo rallye had been running since 1911 and the grand prix starting in 1929, how awesome it must have been to have watched these events in that generation!

Very little has changed on the landscape from what i can see. We sat in the Cafe de Paris and looked over some old picture of the square dating from the 1863...it was no different, except the distinct lack of cars, and the attire of the ladies!

TBH its a pretty quiet road anyway and the French really are quite courteous when they see a supercar on their bumper, normally easing over and waving you past with a smile... I wouldnt think you could carry a fraction of the speed at night, the drops if you mis-read a bend are pretty big, as can be seen from the fact most of the cloud base was below us!!!

    THAT made me ROFL mate...:D:D:D

It was 1942 for my father.

I don't mean to steal thunder from your wonderful thread and pictures. But, you might enjoy a couple more recollections from my visit there in '63.

When we departed Berlin in early December, it was bitter cold, windy and snowing. We were looking forward to the warmth of the Med and seeing French girls in bikinis. Well, surprise! When we pulled into Nice, it was snowing to the waterline! No bikinis. The locals told us it was the first time in 55 years that snow had fallen on the Med itself. For no other reason, I must go back when it is a bit warmer.

My friend and I parked his VW beettle somewhere down the street from the casino, walked up there, up the front steps, headed inside to see the place. The doorman stopped us. It seems that jeans and flannel shirts were not acceptable. We were badly disappointed. He saw that on our faces, and told us to wait a minute. He disappeared into the casino and then came back holding a jacket and tie for both of us. He even knotted the ties for us. We thanked him with deep bows and went on in, looked around, watched people gamble, and then came back out and returned the clothing. We think he figured that we were poor, nearly starving Yank grad students and he had a supply of jackets and ties for these kinds of people. He was a nice guy. He easily could have given us the boot.

We saw a lot of exotic cars there, including E-type Jags, Rollers, a Maserati or two, but I do not recall seeing any Ferrari's. Mostly Mercedes and Peugeots. And I agree, this place has had a long, rich history with motorsports with the rallye and grand prix, a magical place. I bet the place is loaded with Ferraris now, even when there is no event underway.

Thanks again for the chronicle of your tour and wonderful pictures. Very nice.

Ed...lovely to hear your recollections of Monaco of yesteryear, I bet the place has exactly the same special feel now as it must have done back then.

It may interest you to read of our other trip there earlier this year, but this time with considerably more cars and much less wives (non to be precise!!)

    Hi Rob:
Yes, I do. But, they are in the form of 35mm slides. I wonder if a photo shop could digitize them, so I could load them onto FChat? I have some shots of the snow on the beach at Nice, Villafrance, Monaco, Menton, and LaSpesia. Most fun for me is the shot of the square that I took standing in what looks like the same place where you took one of your pictures. However, there are no Ferraris.

Some computer scanners can also make digital copies of slides.

Snow on the beach at Nice - I can't imagine that happens often!
