No, agreed. But it probably 'works' well - in terms of improved rearward visibility, Jim. ;)

I remember reading somewhere, that Franco Sbarro stated that the car was never really meant to be an accurate replica of a P4 - more of a 'pastiche'.

I still have my original well-thumbed copy of Custom Car magazine from July 1986, containing a feature article on the Sbarro P4 - which set me on the road to eventual ownership of a P4 replica.

I suspect that this same article was also probably what sowed the seed in Lee Noble's imagination, and led to his (albeit limited) 'volume production' of P4 replicas.

Fortunately, Lee decided to base his kit-cars on a modified Ultima steel spaceframe chassis. Had Franco Sbarro's own plans for 'volume production' of his P4 ever materialized (beyond this one-off 308GTS-based car), the Ferrari community might now also be bemoaning the 'butchering' of 308's and 328's to produce P4 replicas. :D

An iconic image, by French the photographer 'Dingo' ..... of an iconic P4 replica.
I just wish that I had it in a larger original size. This is a scan of a postcard (CP).

i love the car, and see it more as a "homage" than a "kit car". i bet it would be fun as hell on the street, as a 308GTB is a fun tossable car, and that may be a bit lighter. shame its so expensive, i would love one of those or a GT40 to replace my Pantera :) .

Thank you for that, Matthias. So you are saying there definately is a second Sparro P4 ?

I was never quite sure, and have been given conflicting information over the years.

One thing that I could never get a satifactory answer to, was the fact that the car which featured in the 1986 magazine articles, and also the Sbarro brochure, and this one had different width / offset rear wheels.

Ditto, Michael. Most 'kit car' P4 replicas are 'homages', too. ;)

Most of Dingo's photography was a 'little' different. He was in-house photographer for 'Option Auto', and later for 'Rétroviseur'. There was an interesting two-page article, by Mick Walsh, on Dingo's work, in the April 2006 issue of Classic & SportsCar magazine. I emailed Mick, and he admitted - that even during his research for that article, he hadn't managed to discover who was behind the pseudonym.

Repeat after me .... I must study the photos more closely. :D

It seems there are other subtle differences between these two cars .... under the hood for example.

'Brochure / magazine articles' Sparro P4 upper ....
    .... ex-s/n 28563 lower. Note the air cleaner(s).

An old web page on the Sbarro P4, which includes images from various Dingo magazine photoshoots and the Sbarro brochure:

    http://clcalvet.club.fr/sbarro/modelemois/P4-mai2001/P4gb.html

© text by Philippe Calvet, 2001

PS - I loved this little comment (not): 'There are some (other) P4 replicas. Noble Motorsport, in UK, showed one in 1988. It was a well-made copy but, according to purists, engines were not noble (V6-PRV or V8-Rover).' :D

I don't know how old this online advert is, but the same car that was listed on eBay, recently, with an opening bid price of ChF 320,000 ($270K) is also advertised here:

    http://www.sport-prestige.com/occasions_ferrari/f_308/1364/308GTS_Carross%E9e_SBARRO.html

    .... for a rather more sensible €85,000 Euros ($120K).

Looks like the same photos from the previous www.race-cars.com and 'Swiss Team Salamin' adverts were used.

'Ferrari TIPO P4 Sbarro 1979. Franco SBARRO, the famous car manufacturer is known for his DESIGN espera school. Using his experience as a mecanic in the Scuderia Filipinetti, BMW 328-GT40-Bugatti some Testarossa replicas and few Ferrari TIPO P4 have been delivered all over the world since 1965. This rare Ferrari by Sbarro has a full FERRARI 308 GTS mecanic. Homologated for road use this amazing car is a TIPO P4 1965-68 replica. V8 255 HP carburator engine. 5 speed Ferrari gearbox. Low milage. Very good condition. Delivered to a Swiss collector with a GT40 replica, this car has been stored for more than 20 years in a stable temp.& humid. garage box. Enjoy the famous SWISS finish and perfect assembly. This car suits all SBARRO quality and safety requirements. Delivered with SWISS papers an full history. Free delivery in Europe if quick decision.'

Interestingly, the seller is shown as 'Mr Christophe XXXXXXXXXXX'. The car's recent ebay seller signed himself as 'Christophe'.
Text from this advert is virtually identical to the eBay listing - save for a few 'typos'.
