Recently had the A/C serviced. Still running R12. System worked fine the first couple of months...really cooled well in fact. Drove the car this weekend but couldn't get the A/C to put out any cold air. I can't tell if the compressor is kicking on or not. Didn't know if anything in the AC system was fused or really how to best trouble shoot the problem. Thought I would ask the experts before I blindly tore into it. Any recommendations on how I should trobleshoot diagnosis of the problem?

You should hear a fairly loud click (clunk?) when the compressor clutch engages to run the compressor. If you don't hear it it's not engaging. If you can't hear it in the car stick your head in the engine bay and have someone in the car turn on the A/C. Also, you should see an slight rpm drop when (if) it engages and there's enough refrigerant in the system. I'm sure there's a fuse for the A/C clutch since it's electrically activated. Not sure which one it is though.

I would guess you have a leak. Did they simply add R12 or did they find and fix a leak? You really only lose R12 if you have a leak. If they added R12 because it was low and did not find or look for a leak your problem will return at some point.

My mechanic discovered on my 87 328 that an AC line rested against the fuel line and melted the AC line and the R12 leaked out. Said he had seen it in several 328s. He knew what to do. Did a custom splice on it. So far so good.

Do you mean it cut through the hose because of vibration or something like that? I don't understand how it could melt the A/C line.
