I'm going to be in the market soon for a new vehicle. The car has to serve 2 purposes for me: 1) a refined vehicle that is classy, somewhat exotic, fun to drive on the roads and take a date out to a nice dinner, 2) a sports car that I can take out to the track a couple of times a year and have a blast with. So, I am not looking for either a track car or a luxury car, but a car that has a good mix of the two. I am looking to spend in the $60-80K range. In the past I have owned a Maserati Coupe and a BMW M5 that have both fulfilled this need very well. I have narrowed my search down to 3 cars: Ferrari 355, Maserati Gransport, and Porsche 996 Turbo. Does anyone have any further suggestions or opinions on these choices? Thanks for any advice.

    Porsche Cayman S?
Mid-engine = more fun on the track, yet you get all the refinements for you to take a date out on.

Have you considered a new BMW Z4 M Coupe or Roadster? It would fit all your criteria with ease...$57k fully loaded. Very limited production as well, so you won't see many (if any) on the road.

I picked up a new Coupe about a month ago, and am having a blast with it! Have also had the pleasure of owning and enjoying an F355 GTB, Maserati CC Coupe, C6 Vette, etc. in the past...and must say that the Z4 M is just as fun. In fact, this car will probably be a keeper for a long time.

Viper GTS plus some mods. I do like the GT3 idea though those are some cool cars.

Obviously an f-car would be my first choice. I agree with the 550 but it is more than your $60k - $80k budget.
If you want a new car (for more money), the Aston Martin V8 Vantage might be something to test drive:

The 996 Porsche is the least fun I have ever had with the marque. Driving was akin to cleaning out a shower stall with bleach.

A quality 930 or a 1993 RS America would be my choice.

A Viper is a lot of things, but classy and refined are not two of them.

    How about a BMW M6?

Ferrari 348 or 355. Nothing beats a Ferrari. And +1 on the Vantage. You should test drive it to see if you like or not. I saw one the other day and it looks nice in the flesh. But i would have to go with the 355, always loved the lines on it.

You should be able to pick up a '98-99 355 Berlinetta with the F1 paddles for 80ish. That'd be my preference of the 3 by far. Especially considering it is to be a toy.

Some of the cars mentioned above don't seem too refined to take a date on. My vote goes to the 996 Turbo

My cousin loves his 996 GT3 on the track, but says it's way too rough for him on public streets. The turbo is quite happy on the track and on the street. A Z4 would be a good choice too although I'm not crazy about the looks

Thanks for all the replies. Hadn't thought of the AM Vantage - that may be worth a look. The Cayman S and M coupe seem like good choices, but they aren't exotic enough for me. Never driven a GT3, but I think it may be too rough for my road drives. I may look into a 930 but I think that it may be too vintage for me. I like more modern cars and technology. 550 would be awesome but I think it's more money than I want to spend. M6 is another possibility. I'll look into that one , too. Appreciate the help!
