I'm sorry...I like Nick Cage, he is a great actor, but not as Magnum.

I want to see Magnum set in present day with TOM SELLECK playing Magnum. He's the only guy who can do. Why do these people have to do remakes that suck because they can't measure up to the original?

Yup, this sounds like a bad idea. Although it's a hard role to cast - if it should be cast at all - because the kind of acting that passed muster in the 1980s is now kind of dated.

I don't think Magnum, with its original scripts, would stand a chance on TV in 2007.

Well we all agree that Magnam will be difficult to replace with a guy, maybe Thomas's sister, also a PI, should make an emergency trip to Hawaii and save old Thomas. Let her drive the Ferrari

No, I agree. Today it would be some retarded reality program where annoying young kids in Hawaii talk about how it feels that they got voted off the case and won't be winning the Ferrari.

Selleck is still the best man for this role.

I once saw this line in a British magazine in a "3 Men and a Baby" review...
".. middle-aged handsome men with upper-lip obstacles the size of wheelbarrows... "

    LOL

LOL! True! But you know what...watch it on DVD and it holds up well. yeah, it looks dated now in terms of production quality, but in terms of being fun to watch, it still is.

Yeah, you can definitely see the cheesy Glen Larson influence in Magnum, but at it's core the show has got some depth to it and has a well put together back story. The individual episodes are up and down in quality, but compared to most other 80's action/drama programs it holds up well.

As to a new movie, I'm definitely in the Selleck or nothing camp. Bring them all back and show us where they are today. Don't remake, or re-imagine, or turn it into a retro-comedy '80s romp, or any of that nonsense. But then I'm still bitter about the new Battlestar Galactica not having the original cast...

Same here...somehow I can't picture the soft-spoken Cage filling the role of the athletic, surfer, ex-Navy Seal, macho-type that Tom Selleck / Thomas Magnum portrays.

Instead of trying to replace the original actors with modern ones and trying to pull off an updated re-make, why don't they instead do a modern "continuation" movie / pilot of the original? In other words, pick up where the original left off.

For example, use Selleck to play Magnum with someone like Matthew McConaughey ( http://movies.ign.com/articles/755/755959p1.html ) playing the role of Magnum's illegitimate son that was unknown to us or Magnum until now. Then progress from there. Would be real nice if they could also nab Larry Manetti, John Hillerman, and Roger E. Mosley to also star in the debut movie / pilot so as to sort of put a time/frame-of-reference on current events. They could be featured in future episodes as the need arose for supporting roles.

From that backdrop, the rest of the series could continue with Magnum's son being the primary focus of all things related to "P.I." work. They could still use the Anderson / Robin Masters estate as a backdrop also -- perhaps with the heir(s) of Robin Masters managing its affairs -- or, for a nice twist, a nephew/niece/illegitimate daughter or son of Higgins who just might be somehow the same relation to Robin Masters...the truth of which can never be established conclusively. A niece/daughter would do well, as it would create an ongoing love interest of sorts between her and Magnum's son.

All that would be needed to complete the cast would be to create new friends of Magnum Jr. -- a modern "T.C." and Rick, so to speak. If I recall, TC had a son featured on at least one episode originally -- perhaps he could be "introduced" to the son that Magnum never knew he had. Rick, on the other hand, was always known as quite the "playboy" so establishing an un-known offspring of his wouldn't be that hard or far-fetched. Maybe a daughter who now manages the King Kamehameha Club (?), and also happens to be part Hawaiian -- but sort of a "tough girl". Both TC's son and Rick's daughter/son could even be veteran's of the Gulf War or something along those lines so as to put the military twist (follow in their parent’s footsteps/example sort of thing). Even Magnum Jr. could have been a war veteran also -- unbeknownst to his dad and without Magnum Jr. knowing of his dad's past / military service.

Then comes the hard part -- which car should Magnum Jr. drive? Perhaps, while rummaging around the estate, Magnum Jr. finds a real "barn find" -- the old 308 sitting in disrepair. So, he persuades Higgins Jr. / Masters Jr. to trade it in for a "good deal" he found on a more modern reliable "proper" sports car -- and then surprises and shocks everyone when he come flying up the driveway of the estate in a brand new F430 Spider. I can hear Higgins Jr. screaming it out now..."OH... MY ....." :D

I do think that Ricky Gervais would portray the original Higgins rather well if they were to simply do a re-make (or even as a great Higgins Jr.).

I think to make it work and for people to take it seriously as a movie they should bring out the darker side of Magnum.
In the same way the new James Bond (Daniel Craig) movie has. Not make him evil but show more of the mental scars he has and the things he'd do to solve the case.

Nothing silly or cheeky but like the Bourne or new Bond series.

I own the first 5 seasons on DVD, and while there are some truly great episodes -- Home from the Sea, Italian Ice, and some others -- some it is pretty marginal, even to a longtime Magnum fan. I usually find myself trying to pin down the production years of the various 308 more than paying attention to the usually thin plots.

    Amen. What a friggin' disaster.

While we are on the subject of TV rewrites. The Green Hornet is scheduled for 2009.

Sony has agreed to let Seth Rogan, write and star as Britt Reid.
I have 2 worries, Britt Reid and Thomas Magnum.
Seth Rogan looks more like Mike Axford(the reporter instead of Britt Reid)

Maybe the writers can find 2 unknown look a likes one for Magnum and one for Britt Reid.

otherwise, another movie not to see.

Magnum has been with the navy since leaving RM estate. He's never been back. He gets a criptic note from Higgins, blah blah blah, can he come. Magnum shows up at the estate, an obviously old Dobe greets him. The place is decayed, grown up in grass and brush, house in disrepair. Magnum find Higgins reclusive, blah blah blah. RM has left the estate to Magnum, but crooks are afoot. Magnum looks around the grounds and opens a garage. There he finds.....

    Cue up Rush, Red Barchetta....................

Only instead of being chased by a machine, he gets the bad guys on his tail.

It could be a fun movie with Selleck and the 308. Recall the episode he went back in time and there were old classic airplanes for TC, and old classic cars. I am so sick and tired of rediculous remakes that if Tom and the 308 arent in it, I probably wont watch it. Tom Selleck IS Magnum, nobody else. It would be like getting someone else to play James Garner as Rocford. Aint gonna happen.

Amen. I don't want Hollywood making a stupid movie version of Magnum like Charlie's Angels, The Dukes of Hazzard, or Starsky and Hutch. While I like the light hearted nature of the show, there was always an element of depth with the Vietnam angle. The best episodes were the deeper episodes. I really think that they could still pull off a Magnum PI movie with the original cast. We don't need to have those characters preserved at the age they were in the 80's. We can have them be older. That's fine. It's just like with the new Indiana Jones movie, Indy is going to be 60 years old in the late 50's. We don't need him to be 40 years old in the late 30's to have a great Indy movie just like we don't have to have a 40 year old Magnum forever. I'm sure Magnum at 60 can be just as interesting as Magnum at 40.

I watched the show since the very first episode way back in Dec 80. Never missed one back then and I never really liked it anymore after the 3rd season. I always thought the first 3 were the best.

As far as the movie; I'll go see it but I think it will be an embarrassment to us nomatter who is in it or who directs it.
