I use both McIntosh and Carver right now with a pair of Vanderstein Speakers but I would like to try Krell's preamp and power amp, any thoughts?

I'm using Vandersteen speakers too! I think they are a great value for the money.

I have a mix--nothing exotic. Krell pre-amp, Krell power amps, Denon reference CD/DVD, old ADS towers (love the silk dome midrange).

To my ears, I think the sound quality that's coming from a Tube amp is still the best.

Any opinions on pairing a McIntosh MC501 w/B&W 802Ds? Anyone have either of these components? I'd be interested in hearing comments: positives/negatives/what they're paired with.

It is very difficult for me to hear the difference in high end audio.

We have all mid-line Krell, Arcam and Marantz components. Everything sounds fine to me, but no better or worse than a buddy's Sony ES equipment or the brother-in-law's MX-series McIntosh components running through said manufacturer's loudspeaker system.

I think it is very hard to proclaim something better than something else unless you do an exact A-B comparison. Ears differ, room acoustics differ, sound preferences differ, etc. I did audition amps in my home with my speakers, and to me the Krells were better than Adcoms, Sunfires, and one other brand I can't remember.

I've been wanting to buy these components for the longest time and now with the special they're having I just might. All reviews I've read are excellent.

    Adam,

We actually have 802D's and MC501's in our showroom demo'd together and they make a great match. We also carry Focal, Sonus Faber, Krell, Arcam, Rotel and many other High end lines.

This combo is one of my favorites. Also love the Focal line too.

I have Marantz Pre/Pro, Rotel 5 x 200 and Paradigm Studio's all around with their pw2200 sub. Gives me a smile every time.

Agree with the comment on tubes - I listened to Jazz on some old set of tubes powering wilson audio speakers.....WOW.

Thanks for the info... I've been out of this stuff for while. I might take a closer look at this combo and see how it compares (at least as far as 'I' can tell) to my current setup.

I've finally gone to all tube amplification - Using a Sony SCD-777es as a source into a VTL Ultimate preamp & VTL Delux 120 monoblocks. For speakers, I currently have the Gallo Nucleus Reference 3s in place, but will swap in the Soundlab electrostats whenever I manage to build up the gumption.

I would like to do a home theater.
Looking for advice on a sub woofer around a grand and rear bookshelf but wall mountable speakers.
Was looking at Definative Technologies Sound cube 1 sub. Possibly DT Referance sub.
I want to use my old Bose 901s as the fronts.

Should be just fine. McIntosh amps are amazing sounding, and those B&W's are some of the best speakers on the planet. I know a lot of mastering studios that use them for reference speakers. I fail to see how the pair wouldn't jell together :)

How does it sound? Worth it for the price?

How do the Gallo Nucleus sound in comparison to other speakers? I've always heard good things about them.

Can't go wrong with Def Tech.

On my short list for $1,000 would also be Paradigm and Velodyne units. I can't say enough about the PW2200 I've got...subs are very sensitive to floor placement and room geometry - and it does excellent in the acoustical disaster I call my den.

They have quite an open, detailed sound (due to that CDT tweeter). Not quite as full & rich sounding as some, but quite acceptable once given a THOROUGH thrashing to break them in. Very good bass quantity and definition even without using the dedicated subwoofer amplifier on the sub input terminals.

They were good enough that I didn't feel to bad selling off my Apogee Stages, but haven't yet convinced myself to let go the Soundlab Pristine IIs.

Of course, my wife still prefers the B&W Nautilus 805s with Electrocompaniet integrated (& Von Schweikert subwoofer) we use in the living room - so go figure.
