Wow! that looks really clean, the mileage and the price sounds about right. If they have a complete and updated service history and PPI came back all positive, then by all means loose the SL500:)

They are 390's, i.e. EUROPEAN WHEELS! :( :( The car is clearly a US model (rear deck lid and coils). Someone switched the standard QV 16 inch wheels for 390s. The tires for the 390s are EXPENSIVE (do a search).

Now, that said, doesnt look bad and its a decent price for a "driver" car. Repro QV 16 are available from TRutlands (i think) for about $1700 more, then you'd have to buy tires. The bolster looks worn but its not TERRIBLE. The engine bay looks a bit funny (plug wires in a funny place?) but otherwise it looks pretty good.

Get them to back off the price (or buy the 16 inch QV wheels/tires for you) and it doesnt appear to be too bad of a car...... assuming it passes a PPI or at minimum compression/leakdown.

When having a PPI done , remember to have them check carefully for rust, especially in the lower door areas. The 83's have no rustproofing (84-85 do).
For emissions, 83's use an air pump , 84-85 use an air injection system .(better)
Considering those things, the price is about right, if it is clean, rust free and has solid maintenance records..

My '83 has rustproofing...at least some. And it's in the doors. But this may have been applied by the dealer.

+1 Not just expensive but almost impossible to find. I tried for several days researching online and with local Tire dealers to find the metric tires with no luck. I gave up (was going to eventually get the 16's anyway) and just purchased upgraded (16") wheels from TRutlands. They got here in 2 days and look great! Tires are going on today!

    Total cost for mine:
    Wheels including shipping = $1775 ($80 was shipping) and Goodyear F1 GS D3's (205/55/16 fronts and 225/50/16 Backs) Installed = $675 for a total of $2450

The wheels are period-original - I have seen BOTH TRX and 16" factory wheels for the 1983 transition-period QV cars. Full cutover to the 16" rims did not occur until late 1983-1984 cars. The car was built in Feb. 1983 according to the tag. The next owner might want to update to a 16" wheel to get better/more modern rubber, but doesn't necessarily have to fork out $1,700+ to get there - used 16" rims by Gotti or HRE or BBS would work well, and cost less than trying to hunt-down OEM 16"ers.

I agree the black interior looks alittle cracked, but ITS BLACK......this happens. Leatherique makes a great dye kit to clean and redye that...

Interior looks like maybe it's gotten wet at some point. Maybe top was left off in rain or i dunno what. Interior is pretty worn IMO.

Not a bad car but a decent driver.

Ditch the wheels and try to get a better price. Without a reciept of a major your gonna need a belt service right off the bat.

    Black is nice.

The TRX tires are not "european" tires. They have a metric rim dia. so you cannot put non TRX tires on them. The bead design is different. The theory was to reduce the constraint of the bead to rotate when the sidewall flexed. Ford Mustangs of the same period could be ordered with the 390 TRX tires as an option. The Escort and EXP were available with a smaller version, also a metric dia. They are a very good performance tire for the period, but you can only use the OEM tire on that rim. On a Ford they would stick well enough to seriously overload the wheel bearings (experience speaking here). They were special order in the mid 80's. I would not know where to look now.

Algar is the closest Ferrari dealer.

Search the web for their site.

You'll pay for the inspection but it will be done right.

Or it was left exposed, as posted above.

I agree, could be decent driver for $30K-ish. No service records means no recent major, so you'll want Algar (or another reputable Ferrari tech) to check it out. Then plan on splashing out $3K-$4K on a major, with valves checked/adjusted and water pump done. Also have those fuel lines checked out ASAP - they're cheap, until they split and start spraying gasoline...

308s in black look incredible. Time to lose the SL. Just remember the Benz is a daily driver type of car, whereas the 308 needs a proper warm-up, diligent maintenance, yada yada.

I think you would be better off waiting. By the time you do a major and fix whatever else may be wrong and buy wheels and tires you will be in the 40K+ range. For that, you should be able to buy a well documented 84-85 with fresher service and real 16" wheels. There is a low mileage (around 19K) red/black car in the FCA newsletter with platinum awards asking 42.5. I think that's a better deal.

I am confused by that statement. What was the wheel size for the US VERSIONS of the 2Vi cars or better yet, the carb cars. I thought the US cars came with 14"s and the Euro's came with METRIC tires (I think thats not the case with the Testarosso, but I thought it was the case for the US Versions of the 308s).

Can someone confirm? Specifically anyone with a 80-81 2Vi car, what are your wheels if they are stock?

    James,
The carb cars came with 14". The GTSi & GTBi started out with 14" and then went to the 390's later in the run. The 390's continued on the QV's until midway or late in the 1983 model year when16's became standard. Many owners of earlier cars would like a set of QV 16's which is why they are worth so much. It is my understanding that 16's were actually optional on the carb cars at least, but I've never seen this confirmed with a window sticker, etc.

The metric wheels/TRX tires were original in 1983 for U.S>.spec cars. If my memory serves me correctly, the 16" were a priced option on U.S. cars in 83. I also nknow that the 16" whhels/ Goodyear NCTs were standard equipment for the 84/85 model years

Alger.. Odd cause its ALWAYS in the back of my mind as a great place to get a car. Love driving by, stopping and pressing my face to the windows ;) Feel that AUTO TOY STORE is selling somehting they may not know much about and might be buying someone elses problem. ALso seems like the orig owner is not a fchat member. Wife also said she feels that waiting will be better as well. Somehting 84 - 85 as i am hearing is better. Still cant believe how much info and kindness is delt out here. Thanks so much all of you. Nothing like time. The sl500 will keep me smiling until the fcar for now :)

If there is one piece of advice I could give all would be first time used Ferrari buyers, it would be patience, patience, patience. It pays great dividends not necessarily in getting a great bargain but in getting a great car which is much more important.

    Good luck,
    Dave

A few weeks ago, on a return trip from picking my son up from college, I stopped in THE AUTO TOY STORE in the
Marlton area. I, too, am looking for a Ferrari in the future to keep my Carrera 2 company in my garage. I looked
at the car that you are speaking of. It seemed rough and poorly maintained as if it was stored. I noticed a old, grey
square type, passport radar detector in it, exactly like one I owned approx 20 years ago. Anyway, my point is. if an
owner can't take care of a car's interior, it is equally likely that he is less than diligent with more important and
required maintenance of a car, especially these types of cars. One of the Principals there told me that I could have this
car for a lot less than they asked, the asking price was about $34,000. I mentioned to my son, that I would have to put
at least $20,000 into this car to get it in the cosmetic and perfect mechanical condition of my Carrera 2. The moral of
the story is as another Ferrari Chat member quoted. Buy a better car, unless a particular model year that you are seeking
has sentimental value, you are ok pouring money into a model you can never recoup on a resale and you have unlimited
funds to put it back in its original condition . On another note, for Southern New Jersey only 3 Ferrari service shops that I know of Algar, Ferrari of Central Jersey, Edison and Exoticars Of Frenchtown. Good Hunting!
