Because they are not en vogue maybe ?

Kinda like every kid in the world wearing Air Nikes 15 years ago ? (never mind they were not the greatest thing for your arches)

My point was - get something Snell rated, because there are a lot of helmets that are NOT Snell rated - those I would avoid, obviously, and your club probably would not let you track with a substandard helmet.

I dare say because they don't come close to the quality of Bell, Simpson, Impact, Schuberth, OMP, Arai, etc...

    What's your head worth?

Besides, the more you do this, the more likely you are to test it...

I've also been told that Pyrotect is a budget division of Bell. There are a lot of similarities between the Pyrotect Pro Airflow SA Full Face helmet ( http://www.pyrotect.com/product.php?productid=4&cat=22&page=1 ) and the Bell Sport 3 ( http://www.bellracing.com/productdetail.asp?sec=product&catid=4&prodid=13 ); similarly, the Pyrotect Pro Airflow SA Open Face helmet is very similar to the Bell Mag 4.

Check out HJC. Best bang for the buck helmet in my opinion. I was really impressed with their carbon fiber one.

Be assured that Schuberth, Arai and Bell aren't engineering their helmets just to meet the minimum Snell standards. I don't understand why anyone would consider a cheap helmet.

While on the subject of safety gear:

Why do suits, gloves and shoes have "expiration dates"? Do they deteriorate over time? My 3 layer Nomex suit by now is about 10 years old, but nobody ever checks its expiration date at track days.

You're absolutely correct. Their protection does diminish over time.

For most track days in North America, most clubs don't mandate suits. If they do, they certainly don't check for expiration dates.

For sanctioned competition, your equipment does have to be in compliance.

Bell or Simpson Kelvar helmets. Bell (after S2000)has an uncomfortably tight fit. Simson much better for my head shape.

"If you have a $10 dollar head wear a $10 dollar helmet" ie buy the best saftey equipment available. It will look like a bargan if you need it.
