I don't know if it has been discussed here, it most likely has but my search revealed nothing. I have had my 355 for almost six months now, and I am constantly asked "how much did it cost?" This question has come from friends, family, strangers, contractors working on my house and the UPS guy. Why do people think this is an appropriate question to ask? I usually reply with something like, "less than a new Range Rover" or something...

Do other owners get this a lot? Does it bother you? What do you say?

I have gotten it a lot more than I expected in the short time I have had my Mondial. It always does make me a bit uncomfortable. I usually reply with something similar to what you use, except of course for my Mondial I have to change the "normal" vehicle referenced for the price comparison! For example, I will say, "a little less than a used Camry" or "a little less than that car, that one, that one...." as I point to all the $30K-40K pickups and SUV's in whatever parking lot I happen to be in.

Being in Mississippi, I also once told a guy "about the same as a used bass boat". I think that cleared it up nicely.

There have been a couple of people I talked to who were "car guys" and seemed very genuinely interested and knew a bit about Ferraris. After talking to them for a while the cost of course came up, but I told them in real dollars and also explained how to find a good deal and how much you can save doing your own work. One of them is now actively looking for a 308/328!

I just say "a lot". They are expecting that and it usually suffices.

Car guys generally do not ask cost.
When people ask how much our 92 Mondial cost, they want to hear a big number. Everyone knows Ferrari's are expensive. Right?
I used to say what we paid for it. People always seemed dissapointed.
Now, I just say it cost $100,000.oo new. They always smile. It's what they want to hear. They usually assume it is a 2006 anyway.

The price is part of the mistique, so I do my part to keep it alive. Even if a 06 is more that twice that.

I am not an owner, but a lot of people know I am a tifosi... and they ask what Ferrari's cost. My standard reply is: "Mount a house on 4 wheels."

There are homes in the price range of any Ferrari... the only question is how much does a house cost? Did you buy a mobile home (aka Manufactured Home) for cheap? Did you buy a multi-million dollar estate home? I can find you a Ferrari that has sold in that price range.

Actually pretty simple. Real friends have no need to ask. They have no need to care. One of my friends just bought a Cobra Replicar. He sold his big boat and needed to preserve his virility. He has worked hard and can afford to do any damned thing he wants. In this case, a new toy. I only asked him if he was having fun. End of inquiry.

This has been discussed quite a bit....

    My two answers:

    If its a younger guy/kid:

    "Lots of A's in school"

    Some older person:

"$200,000" some buy it, some don't and get the hint...

I don't mind people asking, and I don't mind telling people. When someone sees the Ferrari and finds out is costs around $50k, they understand that it is a bargain in today's auto world.

Lots of ways to answer.....make a joke...."Oh a little bit a month is all..!" or "I'm just driving it, for the bank."

Or as I often tour schools with kids I try to tell the truth:

"Well, son....it cost me my first marraige, a three bedroom brick home, and 12 years of Child Support at 35% off the top..."

That goes right over their third grader heads, but the Teachers fall out laughing!!!!!!

Or if you have time you could try to school them in the Market..

"Yea the early 308GTBs can be had for $26,500.00 or a new F430 is $265K and you wait three years if you spec the color.....there's really several ways to answer this.

Just the other day the neighborhood gang of 12 year old boys discovered that I have a Ferrari tucked away in the garage.

They were ogling it and oohing and ahhing and one of the kids asked how much it cost. In a flash the 4 other kids got horrified looks on their faces and looked at him then at me and said "Dude! That's so rude! You're not supposed to ask about that kind of stuff!" I laughed and said it was pretty expensive. They seemed to be satisfied with that.

I spent about 30 minutes showing them the Ferrari and my '67 Pontiac GTO. When they left they all said thanks for taking the time to talk about the cars with a bunch of kids. Guess most of the adults they know are not very patient... I wanted to thank them for lettimg me talk about the cars for 30 minutes!

I use it for delivering a message in my School Tours....

"Stay in school, work hard.......do the right thing......next thing you know, you'll be grown up and you'll have one!"

I think of it as running around the world, lighting lil' Tifosi candles. All the little ones in my neighborhood respect me and leave a respectful distance, but they know if they flag me down coming around the corner and Mom saus "OK", I'll give them a ride!

It's really not the best of neighborhoods, along the RR Tracks, but it's a great feeling, to do that for them.
