Car still not fixed-What would you do?

I'm curious if just opening a door while driving will put her into Neutral. Would love to see pics, too.

 

PM me and I will be able to get one of our Ferrari mechanics to sort it out for you. I am in Australia.

He is very good at diagnosis and we should have it sorted if not already by your local mechanic.

Make sure you ask them what they 'adjusted' - hopefully that isn't code for 'hmmm, we tapped it three times, danced a jig, now it works'

But, now I'm curious. How many miles did they put on your car, while fixing it?

 

Cars are really complicated these days and weird glitches can stump even the best mechanics. The problem is they know how to replace parts and use the diagnostic computers but they have no real world experience with these cars, unless they own that particular model which is unlikely. Because of this, they have no idea about many of the unusual things that can pop up.

OTOH, this forum has tens of thousands of hours of real world experience with ALL models, and as a group is MUCH better informed about real world things these cars go through. ND's diagnostic list was amazing! I'm sure it was gleaned not only from his own experience but that of others as well. I applaud Ferrari mechanics who participate in FChat because they can learn a lot of things here about these cars that they would never learn just fixing them. I wish my old Lotus guy was a participant in my Lotus group; if he had been I might still use him!

I would send the list below to the dealer. Maybe they have not thought about these.

1. since the 355 F1 goes into Neutral as a "protective" mode, insure that your doors and trunks (front+back-engine-cover) are closing their latched switches (e.g. does your alarm give you the double beep when you set it). Is it possible that one of these switches is sometimes reporting a door or trunk open while you are driving due to something not being 100% closed?

2. Do you notice if your speedometer goes out when your F1 slips into Neutral in error? Keep in mind that a faulty speedo sensor will cause the F1 to go into Neutral or otherwise behave badly.

3. Check your electrical connections:
(two main ones) By your left rear shock tower on your F1 unit. Examine them for being rewrapped by your shop or otherwise burned. If those two are swapped in error, they will burn up the wiring...and a tech probably wouldn't want his/her boss to know about such a blunder.

Check the black sensor on the very bottom of your tranny. Is it scuffed or does it appear damaged/loose?

Check your connections on the right side of your tranny. A bad connection might be intermittent...giving you an occasional fault...yet not trigger a computer code because the F1 system can't detect every possible electrical glitch.

 

I have a 360 F1 Spider, and I can put it in gear, forward or reverse with the driver's door open. I never tried it with the passenger door open.

Yes, but that should leave an error code in the computer. If we take his techs at their word, there is no error code...so we've got to look at how the system would go into Neutral without leaving an error.

One such possibility is that there is no error; that the system is doing what it is supposed to do (e.g. not going into gear when a door is open). Another possibility is that the error isn't being detected (e.g. an intermittent electrical connection).
