hello folks - today while in the Rancho Shopping Center in Los Altos, i noticed that the gas station is under new management. they are selling 93 and 100 octane fuel!!! ok - i remember when i rode Ducatis this was a blast (literally...) - how about Ferraris? any dangers? other than more speeding (and launching) citations!!! sounds good - thought i'd check before i do a test fill-up... thanks for any input or experience - cheers John
I am also interested in finding out since I am in that area occasionally, but you might get knowledgeable input more readily if this question were in Technical Q&A. Also, the model might make a difference. A gas station in San Mateo also sold 100--out of 50 gal. drums, but I have not been near that station in a number of years. 100 and, I think, 112 octane were available at Infineon Raceway. I asked my mechanic about these two octanes, and he said something about the cars being tuned for 91 octane and there really was no point in messing with it. However, this might simply be a conservative view. I would/will try the 93 octane without hesitation. David
I tried the 100 octane about five years ago .. tried a few tanks of it in succession and did not notice any difference in performance. I can distinguish the subtle performance difference between driving on a full tank vs near empty tank, and a tank of 100 vs 91 i couldnt tell anything. I say give it a try, maybe your experience will differ
76 on Almaden expressway and Foxworhty has the 100. Some say it does nothing and I am no expert, but I have put that stuff in my 360 a number of times and I swear the car is faster. In fact it feels unleashed, just smokes the tires much easier than with the 91 octane. Of coarse my car is a 99!!
93 or 94 Sunaco is the prefferred fuel for <=12.3 comprression or even boosted cars up too even 10 or 15 psi. (tune dependant). Straight 100 is a waste and actually will cause wear in street cars in regard to plugs and gaskets. I found three gallons of 100 to 91 to be good mix in sixteen gallon tank. On the track for race cars, we run C16 (116), which allows for much greater timing and resitance to detonation abit we run copper heads gaskets, replace plugs after every event and motor are completely freshened/rebuilt consistantly. All the higher octanes allows is resistance to detonation, but allows premotes wear. Reminder... California summer (Ethanol) 91 blend is very poor and produces up to seven percent less btu. I would run 93 or mix three gallons of 100..
octane is resistance to combustion/detonation. If your knock sensors are retarding timing due to actual knock, then a little boost in octane will help. If not, it will do nothing.
I've experimented with the 100 octane unleaded fuel at the Union 76 at Almaden/Foxworthy in San Jose, and at the various tracks. I put regular crap CA 91 octane Chevron gas and the 100 octane gas in my 288 GTO and let her rip at the local tracks (Thunderhill, Sears Point and Laguna Seca). The GTO didn't miss a beat with the 91 octane. I didn't notice it going any faster with the 100 octane either. That said, I still use the 100 octane for track use after the experiment. Better to be safe than sorry. Oh, the 91 vs 100 octane didn't make a rats ass difference in my vintage Ferraris either. Steve
Old roadgoing Ferraris have like 8.8:1 compression. They would probably run fine on regular, but who is going to try that?
Thanks for letting us know about the station. I do have a turbo car that loves 100 octane. There's a jumper I can move in my engine compartment that changes the fuel map. I dynoed with 91 octane and had 310rwhp/345rwtq. With 100 octane and the jumper moved I had 324rwhp/365rwtq. Not bad for a 15 year old 3.5 ltr six cylinder. Greg S. '93 Alpina B10 Biturbo
Steve, you need to put F40 turbos on your GTO like a friend of mine! -Ben. Greg- too cool, got any pics of your B10? I almost bought a B12 6.0.
I've tried 100... a good way to waste your O2 sensors and flash your check engine light (on a 360). I would have expected an increase in power, but no real improvement.
A friend has some pictures on his site: http://www.euromcars.com/91alpb10/. I would love to have a B12 6.0. They are refined and fast. It's a blast to drive and a real sleeper. Greg Thanks Drew, but funny how we always want more.
