Lacquer thinner WILL dissolve paint. It is like playing with fire if used near painted surface!! Hell, it contains toluene, acetone, among other things. These are ingredients in paint brush cleaners, which act as paint dissolvers !!! Beware!

Watch out with this method. Different brake cleaners have different solvents. Some have toluene, some hexanes, some benzene....too many formulas out there to generalize and risk on or near a painted surface.

Min spirits is probably the best /safest idea, along with the "freezing" method, as long as the freeze doesnt freeze the paint too....

From my experience, none of it affects paint that has cured.

Used some BrakeKleen today to remove some undercoat that got on a painted surface. It removed the undercoat but didn't affect the paint at all.

Lets be clear about this, my impression of Plugzits thread was that there may have been a little overspray that needed a 'little' clean-up, not total removal. Now if some corrosion got between some underbody panels above the space frame, depending on the extent, it might require substantial removal to address problem areas, repaint, then recoat.
    Thanks Pippo for the clarification.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Why is no one listening to Darrolls?

Brake cleaner is THE best thing. I used it to remove all that brown crap from all over my TR engine bay, wheel wells, under the car and headlight area and trunk.

Use PRIME brake cleaner from walmart. Cheap and will NOT hurt the paint.

I found this method by accident. I was cleaning the suspension and the brown gung started melting...whow, I thought. Hmmmm, let me try here, then there and there.

I spray on and use a tooth brush ( use an old one :) ) to scrub it down. The prime does not remove the black under coating.

DO NOT LET IT TOUCH RUBBER PARTS. All brake cleaner damages rubber.
