Found this while doing some research and thought it might help show how our cars' engine management systems work. Note that the Motronic 2.7 system is a 4-cylinder application! This proves what Dave (group77racing) has always advised, to think of our engines as 2 4 cylider motors attached to a common crank.

    Vince,

This is way old. The 2 4cly engine idea was a throw back from the 8 cly gt4Dino days and how the 12's are set up too.

Hey, I'm just showing the graphic for interest sake. BTW, BMW and Jag did the same thing on their V-12's. Odd way to run management. I figure that due to the lack of V-8's in Europe, they just adapted what they did have, rather than apply a US derived product. Maybe that's why the ECU's are so sophisticated (for 1993), is because there are 2, hence twice the computing/memory power.

That picture is actually a 5.2 concept (or later), note the 2 02 sensors and the type air flow meter and the ETC. You are right tho on the two 4 cylinder engine idea on the 348 and 95 355s(and the few '97 and '98 CHs) but the 96 and later cars went to a single ECU(5.2) to manage both banks. Regards, Vern

May have been a limitation of the speed of the unit? Perhaps one wasn't powerful enough to process 8 cylinders worth of data.
