I remember reading a great article about driving the big Can-Am cars. They said that the first time a new driver took one out, they came back in with eyes as big as coffee cup saucers and babbling about scary power. The second time they went out, they came back grinning ear to ear and bubbling over with affection for the car. The third time they went out, they came back to the pits asking if there was any more power available....

thank you john. iappreciate the lap account. i wonder what the old turn 5 would have been like w/o that dumb bus stop. you would like have hit the markers at 300 ft at 200+ mph and just hang on through 5! that is a fantastic car. i think it would be my first choice in a sports racer.

i am currently looking for a lola t-294 as i think i can swing it better.

how does the mac feel in the straight line as compared to the champ car or even the atlantic? i imagine the dfx makes a lot of power also!!!

Pete, The Champ car has a Cosworth XD engine. 2.65L turbo, 850 -900 hp, 13,500 - 14,500 rpm. The Mclaren has a 565 ci Donovan Aluminum Big Block Chevy with Lucas Mechanical Fuel Injection. It makes 900 hp at 7,000 rpm. The Mclaren probably makes more torque just off idle than the Champ car makes at it's peak. They are like night and day. The Mclaren has instant unfathomable grunt. The Champ car needs to be driven over 9,000 rpm but is a real screamer. I lapped the Glen in the Champ car in 1:36 while the Mclaren was in the mid 1:50's. I think There is about 7-8 more seconds I could wring out of the Mclaren there. I figure it should be in the mid 1:40's.

The old turn 5 must have been wild without the bus stop. Big Cajones!

The Lola 29x's are beautiful cars. A good friend of mine runs a T-298.
Good luck in your quest for one.

Great Stuff. When I was younger I drove my T 70 Can Am spyder on the street for a bit. If I close my eyes I can still feel that Monster heading up 684 through the Starry Starry Night.

ahhhh....traco! the good old days!!!! glad to see this thread revived. i look forward to hearing more on the m-8.

last month i saw jules moritz run the m-8f "led zepplin" car at the coronado vintage races. seeing the car put the power down was insane. almost as if it could spin the earth on its axis!!!

incredible time in motorsport the can am days were. i am afraid they are gone forever!!
