yes, these gear boxes do suck, have blown one, know others who have blown them. That being said, I was warned mine was weak 15K ago. Just lost 4th synchronizer I think. It kicks back and grinds in 4th, and will go in if I ease it after trying several times. It just suddenly started doing this.

Here is the question: I have a track day this weekend, what's going on internally? Metal floating around in there? Why all of a sudden? Stop now and rebuild or hammer it to destruction? Help-FatBillyBob and all you other gear heads on FChat!

Sorry to say, Rebuild it now....If you continue and there is damage in the box, you will just make it much worse and much more expensive.

If you need help, let me know.

    Best regards, Jim

4th gear syncro is probably wasted. How does it shift if you rev match? I don't think it's worth taking a chance at the track. If the syncro hub and or 4th gear is damaged you risk grenading the trans. If it's just the syncro ring you just have to be real good at rev matching. A gear box oil change is in order. Do you have silver glitter or bronze glitter???

Check your tranny fluid level first for reference. Then drain it hot (or let it drain cold all night). Look for metal in the fluid and on the drain plug.

With the tranny drained, open the inspection plate and look up in there.

Fill with gasoline or automatic tranny fluid. Turn a wheel forward by hand while in gear. Drain the gas or ATF (then add a little gear oil and redrain to make certain that you got all of the gas/ATF out). This should clean what can be cleaned easily, which will help a little.

Refill with Redline Heavy Shockproof if you want to risk another day based upon what you saw above (double clutch and rev match 4th), otherwise might as well tear it down now if you see anything extreme or just want to play it safe.

4th gear synchro is ****ed! :)

I would tear the box down and fix it. Run it to destruction if you want to spend/waste more money. :)

I never recommend people drive on known bad parts so I can't recommend. Me I would probably drive it on a trackday knowing I may cause more damage but also there may be no more damage. I would rev match aka heel toe downshift. Before I did anything I would check the shift linkage twice! People are blaming the gearbox all the time for really bad or sliping linkage adjustment.

I can't seem to rev match it. Just will not go in gear at all. As for linkage, where can I look for adjustment here? I fear it is worse, rubbing sound with the car in nutural and motor running.

Seems to me there is some sort of nut that wants to back off a shaft in the trans. This happened to me twice, never understood that. This came from the service dept at the dealer, what is this about and can it be send without taking the clutch out? Where is the inspection plate that was mentioned? I'll do a search as well. Thanks!

Been reviewing threads, most questions have been asked before, but the news looks bleak to me thus far.

if your diagnosis is correct that it is the gearbox making the noise you are done. Perhaps you could get really lucky and pull the GB and just tighten lockrings. OEM Ferrari says use 242 locktite and dimples the lockring into the shaft land and and unknown or controversial torque spec.. I do my own thing and have done it on several GB's 6 so far with no issues. I use 271 locktite at least 100ftlbs with a air tool like a mean tire monkey would do on your wheels with an airgun. Then I smash the ringnut lock ring into the shaft land so that the metal breaks into the land and therefore cannot backout. This sounds harsh to the uninformed but no GB I have worked on has failed yet and no lockring I have tightened has ever come out.

Where is that nut located? Is it behind the plate on the back of the gearbox?

Yes. Imagine putting a 150+ $100 bills into a food processor, then press the CHOP button lots of times.

It's just the tip of the iceberg however. I'm close to $37k for the year in maintenance -- and that's using parts at my cost, not retail. These cars are not for the faint of heart.

What the heck did you replace?! That's a whole 348 TS at current auction prices.

Could none of your major parts be repaired rather than replaced? ECUs? Engine? Tranny?

$37K??????? It would have been cheaper to part it out and buy a 355. (Ducking and running for cover out of the country) :)

I'll explain it all in a few weeks. Pain has no price... Or does it?

There are at least two other Fchatters who have achieved equal pain in their 348's this calendar year alone.

I'm not sure you are still going to drive it, but is there a risk of lockup during operation? I can just imagine a down shift coming into #3 hairpin, then... lockup.

No, will not drive it now, it is sad, just before our event, but so be it. I spent over 40k this year, valves, lots of little things that added up, as well as paint. And to think I could have been buying Dino's for 40K, Daytonas for 80-125K, yadayada. But it has been more fun. Over 40,000 miles in the last 4 years, long trips to Indy, Watkins Glen, Sebring, VIR, lots of Blue Ridge driving and track. So you live one life, and this has been fun...
