Sorry to here about your misfortune Juanito. By the looks of it, it seems that DAMN oil pump bearing has struck yet again! I would go the custom route, the way Reiner did with his. Either that or see if the 355 main shaft bearing will fit.
Holy crap. I guess it's a slippery slope... once you've spent for the valves, you've got too much invested to give up on the car when the next Big Disaster strikes.
I dunno?! 348 valves are just $100 each retail (GT Car Parts quoted me that price when I was rebuilding my top end), and it's physically challenging to bend all 32 because some will be open while others are closed (e.g. exhaust vs intake). But even 32x100 is just $3,200. Retail. And there are some valves from other non-Ferrari engines that fit for a third of that price or less. Realistically a valve job might be 16 new valves (e.g. all intake or all exhaust) with a retail expense up to $1,600 and a clone/aftermarket expense of as little as $600. Are you really in too deep at $600?! $1,600?! $3,200?
I think my valve job was closer to 8-$12,000 done by a dealership. I have seen prices quoted even higher, upwards of 20K.
You're talking about more parts than just the valves (e.g. gaskets, valve guides), and you are also talking about dealer labor charges. When you take that into consideration, such prices as you mention above are easily reached. But it doesn't have to cost that much for the home mechanic. 60% of the above will be labor that can be done by such a fellow for free, for instance. Some parts can be repaired or at least replaced with generic or used parts, cutting out another 20%. So an $8k valve job by a dealership can be done for $1,600 by a home wrencher in some circumstances.
No offense taken. Obviously there are going to be cases when the damage is severe and the owner just has to pony up. I would like to say that *some* expenses can be mitigated a bit, though. Some parts. Some labor. Sometimes.
Man I can't believe what you guys have spent on these cars! I have owned mine nearly from new and it is a 1991 and I don't think I have spent anywhere near 40K in all the 15years of ownership including all the racing. Maybe people were right I ruined a really good car by racing it.
This isn't a weekend project for most of us -- not exactly like swapping brake pads -- so my assumption was Daniel had paid the labor as well. JMF's tab sounds high, but closer to what I would have expected. Really sorry to hear about both gearboxes. I suppose if mine went I would pay the piper and put her right.
Both JMF's car and mine were used in as many DE track days as we could get our hands on, during the past 4 years. How many total miles are on your box FBB? What is the production date (trans number) stamped on your case?
Now that is funny, we need to be neighbors! Let the fun begin....I can't belive how fast my freind, soon to be very best freind has started on this. Opening it up today, any speculation? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Maybe, I'll talk to my pilot (Bill) and see if he can fire up the plane. Looks like great flying weather. Are you going to be in Fl some time soon. Don't forget the cars on 5th. It will be feb 16th. We will have 350 cars and about 80 Ferrari's. Plan on it, I will save you a spot. Sorry about your car. I had a 348 a long time ago. I am sorry to say I did not like it because it was non-stop problems and big problems. I'm not saying all 348's are problematic. That was my personal experience. I had a 328 before that. I drove the wheels off of it. I put close to 50K miles on it. I drove it up and down the east coast. 355's I have driven a lot and it's a good car. The 360 I have driven, but it was ok. Look at my 550. I have never had a problem with it and it breaks down at the track. They are ferrari's. A ferrari is like a woman some days you love them and other days you don't.
Camden has a great airport, my freind flys a Cheyenne III out of it.,,,come on to the Steeplechase on Sunday! Let me know how many tickets you need.
My money is on the outer bearings being shot or loose, and thus allowed the shaft (main shaft) to move, which in turn ruined the synchros.
