HI CHAPS, i wasnt thinking of removing my engine, but i think the decision has been made for me today, i went out for a blast (nice day and all that) motorway , started to open her up then came of the gas ,and the smoke that blow out the exhausts was amazing!!!, back on the gas the smoke went, came off the gas and back on the gas smoking again, it seems when its pulling there is no smoke, off then on the gas pedal it smokes until you level out, drive it around normanly and no smoke only seems to smoke after you go back on the gas after giving it some revs, i have checked the oil level ,fine, disconected the breather return pipe into the air box, run the car still the same, disconected all the pipes from the blowby that go into the inlet housing, and tried it again, still the same, i pulled the big conveluted intake pipe off, from the fuel injection unit to the inlet mouth, and there is lots of oil in there, i can only think ,a ring has gone or the valve stem seals have gone,it does not somke on start up (cold or hot) and no smoke when you just rev it up, its mainly smoking on the overrun, thanks for listening

:(Sorry to hear this Martin. What is the Oil pressure gauge reading?.

I would post this in the 308/328/Mondial section, and also the Q&a section.

I hope you get it all sorted soon

40/45 tick over hot, and 85 when cold, i think it might be a ring, i have just noticed with the return breather pipe off the air box there is a lot of crankcase pressure from the pipe,

thanks for that i have just made up a tool and gauge to do a leak down test, also the only pipe i have not run the engie with it off is the pipe that goes into the bottom on the injection housing from the cold start valve and the that goes to the intake housing, but yes i agree if it was rings it would smoke on start and when pulling hard and high revs, i would have thought if it was v/seals it would smoke on start up,what i cant get my head around is the oil soaked intake rubber hose between the intake and the injection unit, thanks for reading

Or you could try Qv London or Kent High Performance which are both nearish to you.

Is there any chance you have a breather leaking back into the plenum which is then coming into the throttle body then into the rubber convoluted tube?. And the oil is still there from when it first leaked, so it will still show the same symptoms even with those hoses off?.

if this doesn't make sense, it is rather late and I am tired;)

Lovely little car, you look like you have your hands full Martin with all your projects. It makes me look bad spending well over 2 years just on one.

Good work Martin. I would like to take mine out to give it a real good clean and tighten everything up. Most removal I have seen have been through the bottom with the rear chassis removed intact. I had heard its a right p.i.t.a. to remove through the top.

yes it was, but it leaves me with the car that still rolls (wheels still on)i have just finnished stripping it down ,the top rings are knackered, worn to a tapper and so thin there is a 4mm gap when placed in the bore,(checked bores ok ) not even a lip at the top of the bore, but while stripping it down i found the clutch output shaft gear (in the transfer housing ) loose, when it had made up a 4 peg socket and removed it the splines are half worn,it would a stripped the teeth on the gear if left, so i will have to repair that on my lathe, you dont have to mic the rings up you can see the tapper just with your eyes,

sympathise with your engine job, looks like my black one has the same problems, thoght it was the hot start side of fuel pressure system, however Geoff at Shilltech todays reports lack of compression and smoke blowing out when givin it some, plus oil in the filter base, , so out the engine comes for ring job, hopefully nothing else,,Ive cancelled Xmas and told the grand kids Santa drives a Ferrari Sled and may not get here??

hi go for it, its such a easy engine to strip and build, so basic,i deal with mulitiple cam (6 and 8) and piston engines, ie v 10 flat 12 etc (vovlo trucks and volvo penta,) is just a bit PITA to remove out the top, my engine had great oil pressure 85/45 hot to cold,no smoke on start up and no smoke , up to 5500 rpm , only on the overrun, but now looking at the pistons ,iam so surprised it did not smoke all the time, they are tappered by -.8mm out of round, got new rings from trutlands, (for nikasil linners) but the bores are like new, my advice is go for it
