Today, Barcelona, Massa bested only by Michael S(1st), Pedro dL (2nd), Heikki R (3rd). Didn't wreck the car, no reports of him going off. Six tenths off of the undisputed king of F1. The lad is doing OK.

2008 will be incredible without traction control.

Funny how we look at the same data differently: He was beaten by 0.6 seconds by Michael Schumacher. I think that's rather appauling and not something I'd be happy about as a Massa fan. The big guns from McLaren weren't even testing. Unless he improves dramatically by next year, he can forget the pole and most likely the podium.

    Pos Driver Team Time Laps
    1. M.Schumacher Ferrari (B) 1.21.486 90
    2. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:21.857 60
    3. Kovalainen Renault (B) 1:21.894 65
    4. Massa Ferrari (B) 1:22.044 56

And this was on dry conditions.

You need to know the specifics of a test to properly read the results. Thats how any test, F1 or not, works.

Had MS been beaten by Massa by 0.6 seconds, the Felipe fans would all be here praising him (well, one is here praising him anyway). But since it was the other way round, the test is meaningless as we don't know the parameters blablabla.

Massa had mechanical problems in the morning session. i think he only completed 17 laps by lunch. also read on another forum he was mainly doing long runs. considering this is his first day of testing while the others had a two days being 6 tenths off the ultimate pace without tc not too shabby IMO

Please explain how you have come to the conclusion that the test does matter. What exactly were they testing, what tires were each using, fuel loads, aero packages, ect. If you can answer all of those, than you can come to the conclusion that the test wasn't meaningless.. untill than, it's just testing.

P.s. People used the same excuse when Kimi got beat a few times by Massa in testing prior to this season.

I think you have to remember that behind Massa there were a few #1 drivers of other teams, such as Heidfeld and Rosberg. Being behind Schumacher is not the point, being competitive without traction control is. I do not believe Massa was racing back in the day of V-10's and no traction control. Schumacher raced without traction control. For that reason, and just the fact that he is Michael Schumacher, Michael's times are not surprising. I would also have to believe that Pedro has had experience w/o TC.

As for the big guns from McLaren or any other team, that remains to be seen, can't draw any conclusion at this time. I will enjoy watching Louis drive an F1 car without driver aids. That will help determine his true skills. At this time your conclusion about Massa's future is way premature. The playing field has changed. Most of you would have assumed Massa could not manage w/o TC, which he did. Just as most of you thought he would not do well in the rain, which he also did.

Overall, he did quite well for the first time.

How many times does it have to be explained.. Massa as well as other drivers have serious vibration issues. Massa controlled the entire race, and PULLED AWAY FROM ALONSO in the first rain stint. Unfortunately he had some bad luck. You like to forget details. You can take a moment out of any drivers career to try and prove something.. how about Alonso going off in Montreal at the same corner a few times. Does that make him a bad driver? Absolutely not. Everyone was struggling for grip in the first picture, that comment had nothing to do with his skill. You took that completely out of context to help prove your point. It was hurricane weather!

This Massa hating is getting out of hand.

Can someone give me a good reason again why Schumy is not in a driver's seat somewhere? Did he take up some online video game and become completely obsessed for a while or something? I don't get it....

Testing is completely meaningless, including MS's times.

We will see how well Massa does, or anybody, by about the third race next year ... until then you might as well have do "anything" because it would be more constructive than trying to analyse the times.

Is there anyway we can just start a Massa bashing sticky thread? I think it would save a lot of wasted arguing. Anyone that wants to argue can just log on and go at it. The rest of us won't have to read through pages of useless BS.

According to some here, Massa is a top-rank driver who has the skill to become a WDC. In identical machinery he gets blown away by a guy who hasn't driven in over a year, not to mention a test driver and a sophomore...

    6/10s of a second.

Some of you need to research how big a difference that is...

I wonder how many of you claiming "it is only testing" now are among those who were praising Massa for his speed in pre-season testing back at the beginning of the year?
