Ok, guys, I'm giving up on this car... I found it a couple days ago on Auto Trader. You can find it there if you search. 96 355GTB, approx 9800 mi, Red/tan, manual trans. Supposedly had a major earlier this year at Ferrari of Silicon Valley ("$15k".. sellers always seem to want to quote how much was spent on service). It's at Bentley of San Francisco. VIN is ZFFXR41A7T0104428. They told me firm at $69,900. They say it's cosmetically perfect.

Catch is they WON'T allow car to be taken offsite for a PPI, and I'm sure they don't have the eqpt. to do everything themselves, especially a Ferrari SD3 tester. Neither Ferrari of Silicon Valley, nor Ferrari of San Francisco will do one outside their dealership. While talking with F of SV, I also asked them if they had done a major on the car, and service said they'd get back to me in 5 or 10min. I haven't heard back and left another message for Bill there in service dept. after a couple hours.

May be an excellent car... but since I can't get a proper PPI done, I'm bailing.

    Good Luck...
    Rick

Ask them to give you a powertrain warranty for the next 5 years until time for the next major if they won't allow an offsite test. That way if something happens mechanically they can pay for it. Also give you full access to all the service records BEFORE you purchase car. If not then I would bail also--seems crazy to spend that kind of money and have no choice but to beleive what the dealer is telling you...There are also some indepndents out there that will travel to dealers to do a PPI using the dealers equipment and allowing the car to stay onsite, but it is usually twice as much as a regular PPI..

They obviuosly are not interested in selling the car, but rather just off loading it. You are wise to walk away.

Thanks Robbie (I believe it is)... So it seems here's the (strange) facts...

    1. For sale in January at F of SV for $88k
    2. Major by F of SV in March and only 100miles ago (according to Bentley of SF)
    3. Somebody traded it in to B of SF, at apparently a low enough price that they have this "perfect" car priced at $69,900, after it's only gone 100 miles since the major.

    Sounds VERY strange to me.

Latest email I rec'd from Bentley is that they're willing (how generous) to have me fly in tomorrow, wire in full on Monday, at which point they're willing to drive the car themselves to F of SF to have a proper PPI done, and then if there are issues that can't be worked out, they would refund my payment.

How Bass Ackwards is that? Can't understand why a BENTLEY dealer is so anal about having the car taken off premisis for a PPI, unless there are other issues. I think I'm passing...

Can't speak for them, but there are alot of dealers who do this. Basically you buy the car and then have it PPI'ed at your mechanic. I know of a recent 355 owner who did just that. Once it came home and was PPi'ed by the buyers guy they found a few things wrong with the car and the seller stepped right up and took care of it all..I believe he had this in writing from the dealer and the dealer agreed if for any reason he did not want the car after the PPI the dealer would take it back and pay for all expenses. The dealer lived up to his word 100%...So this is not an uncommon practice---just hard to swallow for sure..

Thanks - maybe it's a fantastic car, but I'll leave it to someone else. I'm not letting this guy (or anyone) drive my newly-purchased car for me to a dealer for a PPI, and I'm not making 2 trips to SF to get it done. I want things to go smoothly, without having to jump through hoops and stress to get it done.

I'm sure B of SF is reputable, and they can conduct their business as they want. But if it's not smooth and fun, instead of a hassle, that's my first warning it's time to move on.

I can think of some reasons why they might do this, but it isn't very professional practice. Essentially, they are trying to get you "invested" in the car so that you will go through with the purchase regardless of the PPI results. It's a differrent sales technique, I think, but not very straight. Perhaps they do not have much experience selling Ferraris. When you are the only Bentley dealer in town you can prolly get away with the crap. Walk away and find a better car.

I live here in Berkeley/SF and Bentley of San Fransisco which is also the local Lamborghini, Lotus, etc. dealer are well excuse my language but *******s!
Although they do have a well equipped garage and decent mechanics, If I were in you shoes I would demand the car be taken to Ferrari of San Francisco the ONLY Ferrari certified shop in North America. Their shop is in San Rafael and although they are not cheap, you get what you pay for. They might agree to giving the car to them based on the grounds that Bentley of SF is not certified to assess the condition of the car, good luck!

Thanks - Bentley of SF is just intransigent on this point, so I've given up dealing further with them on this car. They offered to take the car to F of SF themselves AFTER I pay for it, and then refund purchase price if PPI problems can't be resolved with them. Too much hassle and risk to make it worthwhile, even if the car happened to be the best 355 on the planet.

PS - Bentley says the receipt shows major earlier this year at Ferrari of "Redwood City" as I recall. This would be Ferrari of Silicon Valley, and Robbie (285ferrari) said this car shows being for sale at F of SV early this year.

I called F of SV, and their service group was very nice and said they'd get back to me with their service history on the car (ie major work done by them) in "5 or 10min"). I NEVER heard back from them, even after leaving another message for Bill in service a couple hours later. Makes me wonder if F of SV knows something they don't want to talk about on the car?

Maybe it's a superb car, and all the worry is for no reason. But there are too many potential questions in my mind to make it worth my money...

    Typical Ferrari dealer arrogance.

Ferrari dealers HATE customers who are informed. They hate to do business with someone who knows Ferraris.

    Your getting me interested lol
I am NOT on the market for more cars as I have way too many, but if I can find some time I might just stop over at British Motors (Bentley of SF) and give you my two cents on the whole deal. Every once in a while I like rattling their cage and being shown the "Boost gauge" on the dash of a 355 for its twin turbos lol--(true story by the way)!!!

What I do not understand is that this dealership you want to take it to is relatively close to them. It is not like you are asking to have it shipped out of state or something. What is with these people?

I can understand why a car owner would not want someone they don't know, taking apart their engine. I know that if someone wanted to PPI my car, it would have to be at a mutually agreed upon place. I'm not going to let Joe Shadetree go ripping up my f-car engine for the "buyer" to say, oh sorry - don't want it now. Then I'm left holding my d**k in my hand.
