I'm due for new tires in the spring. Thinking of replacing the Pirelli Assimetricos with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Has anyone fitted 275 rears (of any make) on the stock 348 9" rear rim?

Tirerack advises a 9" minimum rim width for 275's so it should work mechanically but I'm concerned visually, especially with 25mm spacers in the rear.

Did a search and found a lot of info on rear tire sizes for stock 355 rims, but nothing on stock 348.

i THINK if you were to go wider than the stock 255 (correct?) the tires would stick out from the fenders making it look a little silly imo
if im wrong, please let me know haha

I was looking at the Kumho site as well and they think a 275 section tire it will fit on a 9" rim. I haven't tried it myself.

    Double Thanks!

According to the tire data, the difference in tread width between 255 and 275 is 7/10 inch, a little less than 3/8" per side. It doesn't seen like much but pictures tell a 1000 words.

Did you upgrade the tire yourself or was it done by the previous owner. Any comments on grip, stability, etc with the new rear?

I've just put some 275 Yokohama's from Tirerack on the back of the 348 on stock rims. It looks heaps better and nothing sticks out.

Not very likely that it will stick out much from the face of the rim. What I would be most concerned about is the width----> 275/40 <---- aspect ratio (sidewall) to make sure the tire doesnt have a larger diameter then whats coming off the car. You will probably have to drop to a /45 or a /40 to keep the diameter correct.

** I owned a 348 Spider back a few years ago and had 27540x17 Bridgestone Pontenza on the rear. Did really well. The stock 255's aren't wide enough in my book.

OK guys, here are the pics, and sorry for the delay. Sameer, thanks for the tire info from your track day. I'll be going with the Kumo's shortly. To answear your question, my car came with these tires, they were good at the begining, but it has been 5 years since I have had the car, and the tires are probably older then that, so now they do not feel as stable, especially the rears, on long sweeping turns on some of the freeways, and it is more pronounced when the tires are cold. So when I change I'll be going with the stock setup this time, to feel what the car would have felt when it was bone stock.
Let me know if these pics are ok, if not I can post more.

Thanks Armen - that's exactly what I was looking for. Final question - it looks like you have spacers -are they 25mm?

Thanks Armen. I had exactly the same loose feeling in the rear of my car when I had a set of Fuzions on that were a bit old and worn. When I swapped it for new rubber, the rear became stable. I think tires have a 6 year life anyway so your tires are at the sell by date.

I think I will try out 275 section tires next time. I assume you do not have any rubbing issues as you didnt mention it.

Compared to a stock 255/45/17 tire:
... A 275/40/17 tire is about 1.4% faster than stock
... A 265/40/18 tire is about 1.2% faster than stock (std 355 tire)

    No rubbing at all!
Were you thinking of keeping the front stock?

Not sure. I would think a 225/50/17 front and a 275/40/17 rear would be nice. I would get 10 mil more rubber in the front and 20 mil in the rear for better grip and less than .2 lb increase in overall weight per tire.

with the new 275/40 will there be a noticeable gap between the wheel well and the tire? (coming down from 45's or 50's to 40's seems to be much more lower profile)

Taking Kumho tires as an example going from 255/45/17 to 275/40/17 will mean that the overall diameter will drop from 26.1" to 25.7" = .4" drop overall. Thus the fender gap will grow by 0.4".

Actually, it would be "half" of that, giving you 0.2" difference.

My (used) spider came with the 295/35/18s. (If you upgrade to 18s) I don't see why you could not run a 295 as well with spacers, Scott

You could probably go 285's on a stock 348 wheel I reckon! :):)
Just by looking at Armen's pics. ;);)

I dont think so. I think you need a wider wheel. I believe the max that can go on the 9" rear is 275.

    Bah, never say never!! :D:D

Give me two spoons and I will make it fit. ;);)

Seriously though, I have 275's on an 8" rim on my old Ford. I took a wild guess and said that you could go 285's on a 9" rim. :)
Its only 10mm more tyre on rim 25mm wider. Dont know, whatever I guess. :):)

I think the 275 is a little too wide for the camber and will wear out the inner edge too quickly. I've only put 2000 km on the new tires so can't say for sure. 265s seemed to have a much flatter footprint.

Using 18" 360 wheels. Picture attached is the 265s
