True enough, but its all hear say regardless. For all we know it could have made Renault do worse than better them? Something was obviously up with Renault this year anyways, I'm sure its not the lose of Alonso. I don't know who is assuming only the winners can be harmed? Ferrari wasn't winning either the WCC or WDC before the penalty was handed out, but the WDC wasn't effected by the penalty regardless.

The 100 Million was just wrong. They should have docked WCC and WDC points, no fine. That would have been fair and they wouldn't face the problems they're facing now with Renault...

 

That is exactly what I thought the penalty should have been too. Cause there would b a huge uproar if one of the McLaren drivers got the WDC.

Max clarified this for us mere plebians when he let us know that posession was enough, the info did not need to have been used or gained from. Max's life got a lot more complicated when the interpretation of he rules he conjured up to nail McLaren are now directly applicable to his buddy Flav.

Having the info and using it are two different ideas.

If you had is bank info and used it, that's against the law. If you had is info and didn't use it, sell it or in anyway gain from the knowledge, then you wouldn't even get a slap on the wrist.

The problem would be, prove you didn't gain an advantage. {Renault} has a much tougher job of proving that. Sheer coincidence could land them in hot oil.

Hey, Tony, how much do you wanna bet that the reason Alonso is biding his time is pending the outcome of the FIA/Renault deal.

I think all those guys (FIA/teams/drivers/Bernie) talk a lot more than we know. I bet Flav is talking to Max telling him to give him something he can take to Alonso to get Ferdo signed up, because he doesn't wanna sign the line until he KNOWS he won't be out of a drive or team in 08. I bet Max is telling Flav he's working on it but "he can't make any guarantees".

Thats part of the problem in F1... it's not really a governing body/subjugated team type situation, but more of a clique/megalomania thing going with Mosley and his friends. My .02 anyway.

 

Mike, I have been thinking the samething myself, one question I have is, if Renault gets fined $100 MIL and leaves F1, where does that leave Red Bull for an engine supply even though they may end up with Alonso for 08?

 

Part of the decision to fine McLaren $100,000,000 factored in the ability to pay it.

If Renault would collapse with a fine like that, then it wouldn't be issued.

The 100 million clams wasn't "the penalty" for what happened, it was the decided penalty. If McLaren do it again they might be fined even more and may be excluded from a season or the next season's points etc.

If the 100 million would have bankrupted McLaren, they would have received less of a fine.

 

Good point, and all of that is why Max was an utter moron to lick his lips and delight in dropping the hammer as hard as he could on Ron's head. If Renault gets an equal fine (and they are a much larger company than McLaren and could afford a LOT more), then they will just bail, possibly leaving RBR screwed.

Max didn't think of all this when he was so hasty to dish out his much-anticipated revenge to Ron. Thats why I am completely confident that the FIA and Max will come up with some convoluted and completely bogus way of letting Renaul off the hook by trying to point out how what they did was nothing compared to what McLaren did. Then myself and others will marvel at Max's lack of respect for the sport's fans in thinking they would actually buy such a line of crap.

Renault is not going anywhere, at least not forced to leave F1. If they were winning races in 2007, the scrutiny would be microscopic. As it is, if they had any useful information, it apparently did not translate from British to French very well.

Mecachrome International has announced that it renewed its contract with Renault Sport, on an exclusive basis, for the manufacture and assembly of Formula One engines developed by Renault Sport.

The contract is for three years, beginning with the 2008 F1 season until the end of the 2010 season.


"Renault Sport and Mecachrome have been collaborating for many years in the high performance motor sports sector, particularly in the Formula One World Championship, and have developed a long-term partnership based on their respective know-how and experience," the press release stated.

 

Let me see if I've got this straight: Renault used McLaren engineering, and McLaren used Ferrari's?

What's that say about McLaren engineering?

If anything, saying that Renault had McLaren's engineering data just further indicates that McLaren were using Ferrari's, instead of their own.

 

Anyone have a link to the basis of the 'just a floppy' reasoning? I can think of several things, including Zip disks and even cdroms, that laymen much less "journalists" might call "a floppy".

 

That is irrelevent. The FIA decided that mere possession of ill-gotten technology is sufficent cause for a finding of guilty. Folks here were screaming bloody murder about the mere possession of Ferrari info by McLaren. I would like to think that they are similarly outraged by Renaults actions...seeing as how so many took the moral high ground and all...
