Surtees (as near as I can recall it): "We calculated the length and duration of the race, factored in the rate at which the engine would burn fuel, took into consideration the evaporative effects of the desert heat--then we filled it to the brim."
This is one reason I Love my Lola. In 1966 it was a Donohue/Pensky Can Am Spyder and won several races. (Kent/Mossport). For several years I drove it on the streets of NY late at night in this form before couping it. The T-70ies ran as both Can Am Spyders and as coupes in endurance races. She now has over 40K road miles and every time I drive her the Winds of the old days blow through my hair. This June there will be a Can Am reunion race at Mossport: http://www.lolaheritage.co.uk/news/news241/241.htm I'll try to bring SL 71-32 back for some laps. http://www.lolaheritage.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1086 Hopefully some Ferrari Can Am cars will show as well. UPDATE "CanAm: The Speed Odyssey DVD: Good news/bad news. The discovery of additional footage will push the total running time beyond the 1hour 20 minutes we had originally expected for this program. I've been told the finished product will be 'closer to two hours than to one'. However, that means another delay. We are now looking at a January 2008 release in both NTSC (US and Canada) and PAL 2&4 (Europe and Down Under) formats at that time." I feel like a little kid at Christmas. I can't wait any longer!
Great find Jim, I have to get that DVD. I love Can Am cars! Ever since I saw them race as a kid in the '70s at Watkins Glen they have left an indelible impression on me. They still make the hair stand up on the back of my neck and leave me speechless. I have raced both modern LMP's and old Can Am's, and while modern LMP's are of course better handling and faster around a course, there is nothing like the absolute raw brute force and pure over the top overkill of a 'pre '73 Can Am car. A machete vs a scalpel. Here is a brief clip a friend made of my Mclaren M8F at the Kohler International challenge at Road America this summer. It was really only the second time i'd ever driven it so I was still carefully working my way up to it's limits. I didn't even come close. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/wm/7e9f2106-6080-4126-b71e-99de018371f6.htm
There was a Ferrari CanAm car at Mosport for the FCA event there in 1982. I believe Manfred Lampe was there with his 512 to. A silver Boxer from Foreign Cars Italia (Steve Barney?) made the long trip north and sounded great. However no other Ferrari compared with the amazing and loud CanAm Ferrari being exercised at Mosport. CH

No idea who saxon is, but if this CD has a lot of intrusive music tracks over the ambient sound of the races I'm not a buyer. Rather hear the engines, thanks. Jack.
heavy metal thunder is a song by legendary british heavy metal band saxon, but don't worry, I doubt they'll be on this DVD!
