Not defending anyone or anything like that but it is a fact that he wasn't allowed to own a gun. That's why he was trying to protect himself with a machete. I would interpret that to mean that he was a convicted felon. So maybe he wasn't a saint...

Regardless, it's a horrible way to go. RIP.

Being a Huge Canes fan, This just hits me hard. It's so sad to see someone go trying to protect his family. A gunshot wound to the leg???????? Who would have figured that would kill you!! RIP Sean Taylor, you will be missed!

Read in an article about him on msn that his car (at some point in his past) was riddled with bullet holes, and he had some kind of connection to a gang.

It's funny how some of the self-rightous in the african american community are so quick to play the race-card, yet are some of the most discriminatory.

That was one of the dumbest articles I have read in a long time....He was blaming Hip Hop music for black on black violence and for Sean's death.

I do find it strange that some people are having such a problem with the mentioning of Sean Taylor's troubled past. At this point we don't know what the motivation for the murder was, so his past may very well be relevant. But I also don't think it is fair to assume that he was a "thug" or it was gang violence. People need to stop jumping to these conclusions till there are some real facts.

Whitlock makes some good points when issues like this arise. His point isn't that music is killing kids, it's about the community tolerance/indifference towards the glorification of violent lifestyles. And that when someone has the ability to remove themselves from their dangerous upbringing, they instead choose to maintain a connection to criminal behavior, no matter how minor. His article about Michael Vick made an excellent point. He wrote about how so much of the debate and subsequent racial hand-wringing had more to do with social one-upmanship than any objective feelings about guilt or innocence.
