There's precedent this has happened at least once before causing a pretty thorough extinction. You're right, I think people would realize how worthless their possessions are in such a scenario. Lots of folks use material things for comfort and as a cover for real emotional issues. Imagine if that were stripped away? Makes for a great story. The desperation would be chaotic. Maybe I could write a screenplay? My ending would be very dark: no technology capable of saving the world, no last man standing, no one hiding out for five years in a bunker and re-emerging later on, no plants, no insects, no water. how about, like the twilight zone, the earth gets hit and knocked out of it's orbit. would you rather it spun into the sun and burn or fly off into cold space and freeze?
Actually i remember reading/watching that, that the actual meaning was lost in translation. What they really predicted was that, in 2012, time ends as we know it. Which i think we adopted the mayan calender? Therefore time as we know it will end, but in any case, who cares.
