Just watched it. AMAZING time by Hamilton. I wonder how the other F1 drivers (Alonso and 'our' guys... Schumacher!!!) would compare. But Hammonds F1 feature was the true highlight of the show. Fantastic! I have never seen (or read) anything which conveys the feeling so vividly as he did. I've done 2 years of Formula car development and I know how frightening even the smaller cars can be, but this was just great. That's why I love Top Gear.
I do get the feeling that TG always exaggerates a bit to get their point across. If it really is that hard to keep an F1 car on the road than all the Corse Clienti drivers are super humans too. But the message was clear.
TopGear has this uncanny ability of making stuff real and give you that feeling of sitting in the driver's seat. Plus they seem to be as whacky as I am and answer all my deep "questions in life": Like the comparison between a road car, a rally car and a F1 or what if we put R/C into cars or how compares GT4 to a real lap around Laguna Seca. BTW: I'm thrilled about the TG track being part of GT5 on PS3. Finally I'll get my shot at the track. It's all matter of how fast you go. I have driven a couple of F1 cars and I'm no super human. But then again I didn't do any Stig or Hamilton lap times either. I recently read an article about a Clienti Corse meeting and how bad those drivers really were. Well, bad as in lap times compared to real F1 drivers. I believe it was Jo Volanthen who was actually mocking them badly along the lines of "much more money than talent".
As Andreas stated - they are rather crappy drivers They just have far more practice than Hammond... I've read the article Andreas mentioned, too, I guess - Vonlanthen was fighting on the track with a F1 Clienti guy in a 80s Ferrari. Vonlanthen drove a Maserati 250F...
Best news I've heard all day! When is it finally coming out? I've seen some demos recently but nothing definite about a date.
Yeah, pretty cool, isn't it?! I'm stoked too. Release date is still far off. Officially next spring, rumors have it more like X-mas 08. Yup, same article. Was "Auto motor sport" I believe. I got a big kick out of Vonlanthen and saved that article. Normally when you read about Clienti Corse the writers are always fawning like total sycophants. But you never see a laptime.
Thats great news was only saying to my brother the other day the one who releases it will be in the money . On a side note I remember Clarkson doing a time on a PS ,then getting in the same car same track trying to match it got no way near it.. games are to forgiving, so when you post your lap time on the TG track I will remind you
AMS? Motor Klassik? The latter I believe. Great read anyway. I saw the F1 clienti at the Hockenheimring in 2006 and the FIA Thoroughbred series (<- correct name? Anyway, all kinds of old F1 cars) 2006 and 2007. Fantastic to see these old cars driving, but I wondered all the time how a REAL driver would compete among them...
Have you still got 3 screens linked up ,I thought I saw a pic somewhere you posted it looked awesome..? Does it give you a headache after a bit, it does me.
I saw that episode, he was using an NSX around Laguna Seca. Between the PS2 and real life, it was something like 10 seconds.
I posted that pic, but that wasn't my setup. I have just one XBox and one monitor. But I'm thinking about that 3 monitor deal all the time. Once XBox prices drop I'll probably go for it. Also depends on whether any other games will continue with supporting 3 monitors.
Enjoy! http://jalopnik.com/cars/top-gear/video-of-lewis-hamilton-taking-on-the-top-gear-track-329059.php
One time this year Von Lanthen was furious because he didn't get as much laptime as he expected because there were so many code reds (cars gone off the track). But overall I haven't seen many offs with the Clienti programme. There are noticable differences between the Clienti drivers when speed is concerned but it doesn't hold a candle to the real deal. For example if you see Ferrari testing at Fiorano it's so much faster, it's mind bogling.
Thanks. I wish the journalists would point that out from time to time when they glorify these drivers.
I was at the Ferrari end of year track day at Mugello in 2005. The Corse Clienti guys did a few laps in their F1 cars and looked pretty fast compared to the road cars that had been on the track previous to them. After the Corse Clienti guys were done Schumacher and Barrichello put in a few demonstration laps which really showed the difference in speed between real F1 drivers and the Walter Mittys. They're not even in the same dimension.
Nice little piece by Andy Wilman (TG Producer) : http://www.topgear.com/blogs/planettopgear/087-hanging-with-hamilton/ Like this bit:
Hmmm, yeah agree ... maybe, but his father is completely the opposite ... ie. SHOW ME THE MONEY I personally think the best LH could do for his racing career now is to politely push his father into looking after his money only (after saying thank you) and hire a real manager. His father (I believe) was behind the non-team playing BS at Hungoraring and sorry it was a wrong move that may have cost his son the WDC! Pete
