" In August 1978 a French filmmaker had a camera mounted on a 275 GTB and a professional Formula 1 driver drove for eight minutes through Paris" . Note the google map. You can zoom in and if you switch to Hybrid see the streets and course he took. He drives right on the white line and blasts through countless red lights as fast as he can. They did not have permission to film. Truly a insane drive with a nice French ending.

Sure. There has been years of controversy about this video made by Claude Lelouch in 1976. Whether it really was taken from a 275 GTB or from the filmmaker's Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 car. In a 2006 documentary about making the film, they said it was shot in the MB and the 275 GTB sound track was added later.

Lots of info on the film and the controversies here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C'%C3%A9tait_un_rendez-vous

Either way, the driving scenes through the streets of Paris are impressive.

Yep, it is an "oldie but a goodie". The 275 GTB is one my favorite Ferraris of all time.

Here is a picture of Mr. Marriott's 275 GTB that I took back in April 2007 when the FCA MAR club had the event to visit his collection of incredible cars. I was just amazed at how nice this yellow 275 was.

The video just doesn't give the same excitement knowing it was a big fat MB and not an F-Car.

Well, some people believe it was actually filmed in the Ferrari and the filmmaker made up the story about using his MB to protect the Ferrari owner from all the legal/social controversy about the film. Hard to say. The sound track certainly sounds authentic, given the movements in the film. Given the super low budget and the one-take nature of the visual part, I can see why some people think the car in the film actually could be the Ferrari.

Also, wouldn't a high-powered MB be just as good as the subject of the film if the intent was to shock people with a high-speed run through the city? Given that, also why invent the Ferrari idea and go through all the work to splice in a coordinated sound track?

Not sure we'll ever really know the truth on this one.

Here is a picture of the gyro-stabilized camera mounted on the front of the MB (photo from wikipedia article). The mount looks like it is fabricated from simple hardware store materials and does not look like it would take much to mount something similar to any car's front end.

Wow, that's awesome...I have the video on DVD, but had never seen it mapped to the actual route on Google...love it! I'm hoping to make a European trip in the couple of years (hit a few F1 Grand Prixs, etc), it'd be awesome to duplicate the route in real life...although I'd probably actually stop at the red lights!!! LOL!

That soundtrack was provided by a Dino not a 275.

That's another thing going for them.

After following the link in post 5 I would say I stand corrected.

I don't know if any of us will ever know the truth though. I feel it is incredible that a fabricated soundtrack is so convincingly matched to the screen.

Lelouch had a 275 GTB, but not used in the video.
The sounds of the video is from a Lambo Miura.
