I've noticed the yellow front side "F" fender plaques are not on all 308's. In fact, most cars I see do not have them. On eBay and other vendors they are quite pricey.

Was this an OEM option or an aftermarket add-on? Is it suppose to be on both sides? Inquiring minds want to know.

To be correct, are they suppose to be a decal or more substatntial - like an enameled metal?

    Thanks,

On a 308 they are not "correct" in any form. Adding them is a matter of personal choice. They are available as vinyl decals, resin-coated "raised" decals, or enamel cloisonne like you actually find on the more modern Ferraris, which is by far the higher quality choice.

I wouldn't add them to a 308. Not a factory item, as posted above, but more importantly the shields are superfluous: if someone doesn't know a 308 is a Ferrari, they've been living in cave.

If you want to try them, I'd find a set of the magnetic ones. No permanent damage to the car.

    Bob,

To answer your question a little deeper.....the shields were used on Ferrari race cars. The SF in the shield stands for Scuderia Ferrari or literally translated Ferrari Stables. Some purists bristle at the thought of them appearing on ANY street car but they have been offered as a factory option since the 348 or 355 series (I'm not sure when it started but I'm sure someone will!).

As far as I'm concerned they are a matter of personal taste. I had some on my car for a while but finally took them off just because I didn't like the look with my car being Boxer trim. I put one on the trunk of my daily driver ( which will make the purists bristle even more!!) and the other is in a box somewhere.

To be properly mounted like they would be from the factory they should be a metal backed cloisonne badge and be recessed into the fender so the outside of the shield is close to flush. There are also some heavy resin type that have a stick on backing, and magnetic ones you can just slap on and pull off at will.

On my 328, I wanted to add these SF sticker (vinil) but finally did not, mainly because it is not so original.
I saw once a 328 in Italy with same SF shields of actually offered by the factory on modern cars : I mean metal badges applied on the body. But it was done by a Ferrari small garage (not official dealer). It was good work, but not original.

I disagree...I think the stick on shield on a 308 looks cheap. The car looks great as is. The shield disrupts the lines of the car. The new Ferraris were designed with the shield in mind...the 308s were not.

    Just my opinion.

WOW! I go to sleep and wake up to a mountain of information from all you guys!! This site is great. Thanks for the input. I had already elected to keep this off my car but was just curious as to its origin and purpose.

when I bought the car it already had them,I could tell they are the very best ones,I'm not going to try and take them off,for I might damage the paint and then I'll wish I never listen to those who siad it shouldn't be there

I resisted putting them on my 77 308GTB until a set came along at a weak moment. I really like what they do for the look of the car. I think I will continue to like them some days & not other days.

My 308 had really nice cloisonne shields on both sides when I bought it. If I ever repaint the car, I will probably remove them. But I don't want to take a chance on damaging the paint trying to remove them now. So there they will stay for the time being. I do like the way they look, but I think the car generally looks better without them.

....and dash, and ash try, and windows, and, and, and.......

If anyone wants to remove shields that are on with double back tape there is an easy way to do it. Heat the shield up with a heat gun, actually a hair dryer on high works really well. Heat it up until it's hot to the touch. Then slide some dental floss behind it holding it tight to the body. Work the floss down and the shield should eventually pop off. A little cleaning with something like Goof Off and a little detailing and you are done! If you are careful and someone didn't do something like epoxy it on, you should be fine. As usual though your mileage may vary!!

I'd just be careful about GoofOff to take out remaining left over stuff - it will eat your paint right off most likely ... gotta be careful w. that one (however great around the house)

I wouldn't have recommended it if I hadn't tried it myself. I suppose if you soak the car in a vat of the stuff it could have a negative effect on your paint. A dab on a rag to get the residual adhesive off isn't going to strip the paint. These things aren't made of eggshells you know!

I did say your mileage may vary but it worked just fine for me.

The 308 I just bought (see profile pic) has these...apparently sticky-back metallicized paper or vinyl...and I'm going to take them off first thing.

I've heard using a hair dryer works to soften the adhesive enough to peel them off, but I'd be afraid to use Goof Off to remove the adhesive residue.

I have some Griot's adhesive remover, which has much less of a chemical-solvent smell than Goof Off, but works very well. I'll try it on a small spot under the hood or somewhere else hidden before proceeding.

Any other suggestions for getting these things off without damaging the paint finish?

I bought a pair of vinyl magnetic shields several years ago for the 330 2+2...just pop on, pop off.

I love the badges. The touch of yellow really pops against the red.

Good to know anal retentive geeks with pressed khakis and a blue jacket wielding clipboards know the correct history of these cars but his opinion has no bearing on me...at least not on this car.
