F40 vs. Countach LP400 Periscopa

    Seems that F40s are priced around $500k +/- And we know early LP400s have really taken off in the last couple years. So while still searching for a 348TS, I happened to notice an F40 for sale on Autotrader for $599k, and an LP400 periscope version on Ebay, also for $599k!

    I thought about taking a poll, but I really think that most here would take the F40 in a heartbeat (I would), assuming same condition and price. Of course, they are far different cars, more modern Turbo track Ferrari vs. vintage Lambo GT with earth-shattering design (for the time). But still wondering if anyone would rather have the LP400? If it's really worth north of $500k, how much more should an F40 be worth? Do you think the F40 will soon also be rapidly appreciating? I'd say the LP400 periscope is more rare, but haven't tried to check production figures.

    Thought it would be an interesting question. Opinions? BTW - I can't afford either one :(

    I have an F40 and an 86 Countach 5000QV

    The F40 is just fantastic after you upgrade the brakes & add Tubi straight pipes

    The Countach is a fantastic looking exotic but the F40 is much more fun to drive

    I haven't driven/been in an LP400. From my experience in a later injected Countach, I think the F40 is the superior car. But it's also far newer technologically.

    There are 1300+ F40s, so clearly the LP400 is rarer.

    I suppose I'd take the F40 to drive, and the LP400 if it was a show car/trailer queen.

    Having driven a Countach 25th and an F40 several times, the Countach can only dream to replicate the driving experience the F40 brings. In fact i didnt have much fun in the Countach. very very cramped interior , gearbox was a nightmare , impossible to see out of , very light front end that likes to change lanes on its own..

    Nice to listen to and to look at but once you leave the driveway, id rather be in the Ferrari.

    You should change your sig to "the same seats in the US spec F40".

    Euro spec seats are true racing seats. Just a heads up....

    It is like asking someone, if they want a tired Lusso driver, or a F430 F-1 Spyder. Both cars have nothing in common.


    LP 400 production, is approximately 150 cars from 1974-1977.

    I tend to think the future collector and $ value of a Miura would be greater than for an F40, so that would be a tough choice for me. The Miura is an amazing vintage classic, from an era we'll never see again (well, unless another mile-wide asteroid hits) :) But the F40 still has incredible appeal... a racing Fcar (sorry tightly-wound members) for the street! An amazing car to look at, and I'm sure just awesome to drive.

    But they are different cars for different buyers. There are a couple F40s in the $500k area in the Ferrari Market Letter. F40 seems undervalued to me, if an LP400 is worth $500k and a Miura is $750k-1Mil (or whatever latest sale is).

    ...and a Lamborghini 350GT at 250K is undervalued, if a Lusso is 450K. A 1990 ZR-1 Corvette is also undervalued at 30K, if a 1990 Testarossa is 65K.


    We can play these games all day.

    And wasn't there just an F40 that didn't sell for $712k? (Which I call BS, the seller had to be fishing.)
    So there might be a $100k difference.
    My vote is for the F40, but ask this question in Lamboland and I'm sure you'll get Lambo votes.
    And regarding rarity, to me the issue is looks. I like to F40 better. The LP400 looks like 400S, 500S, and the 5000. The F40 only looks like the F40.

    F40 vs. Miura is a harder question. Still apples vs. oranges, but I love them both. I may have to go Miura. Damn you hypothetical questions!!

    I've found all these comments interesting. Yes, it's a hypothetical question; If you ask Lambo folks (which I also am.. own a 400GT), you'll get different opinions than if you ask Ferrari folks. No mystery there. I'd still prefer the F40, even though I grew up in the '60s and bought my first Ferrari in the '70s.

    I'd think that if you ask the general collector/exotic car-buying population, a majority would prefer an F40 to an LP400. And yet the F40 is priced the same. I'm sure there are more F40s available than LP400 w/periscope. So that's one explanation. Maybe people expect much higher maint. costs for an F40 than for the LP400. Not sure... so that's why I asked the question... just to see how others feel about some current differences in the market, these two amazing cars, and what drives exotic purchase decisions and values. In the end, we all make our own decisions based on our own criteria. :)

    I think somehow the thread when from LP400 Perisopa Countach vs F40 to Miura's vs F40's :)

    My opinion, the Countach. Just for it's place in car history (granted the F40 holds honors as well), and the fact that it's out of this world design is STILL turning heads... and well... I'm just an addict, and thats what it comes down to. I'm not as interested in the pure power and details when driving or tracking a car, cause I rarely get to speeds that would really cause me to worry about that level of detail. I just like to enjoy the car for what it is good and bad, and I think I'd hands down enjoy a Countach over much else.

    But... if I wanted to go crazy on a track day ;) F40 (even though I've only seen one from distance, never even sat in one yet) for sure.

    ... and I know some will wonder how this is possible but... seriously, other than collector value... I wouldn't be pressed for a Miura. Not sure why, just never "stuck" with me. Again, havent gotten to ride in one or anything yet, so that could change at the turn of a key someday.

    Isn't the countach a fiberglass & alumimum car that weighs 3300 lbs, built over 16 years, with a production run over 2,000 units? I can't believe they are the same money. Someone plz post up some pics for comparison.

    My references show only 150 total production for the LP400, and I don't believe all of them had the periscope. But I don't have any references that say for sure how many had the periscope. I haven't checked a few of the major Lambo websites, which may have more info.
