I went for a drive this afternoon and I haven't driven the car in two weks due to poor weather. At first it felt perfect, then I could hear a perculiar noise at certain RPM's.It appeared to be coming from the rear passenger side.It sounded like bearing noise or vibration noise. Then I felt a slight loss of power, minimal but noticeable and the exhaust note had changed.I got home and with the engine running I got out to see.I free revved it a bit to see if I could hear anything but the engine noise drowned out anything.I felt that the sound sounded like an exhaust leak maybe cracked header or crack in the muffler. Then I noticed that I had lost a bolt on the flange that bolts the rear header to the muffler. It got a bit dark and the engine bay was still too hot to work on so I will tackle it tomorrow.More to come.....

Be glad it was that easy to diagnose, and that it's going to be a low-cost fix!!

Don't be ridiculous! Totaled car... That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. Don't listen to him. I just happen to have an original bolt in pristine condition that I'll sell you for the fchatter discount rate of only $4500, and you'll be good as new!

Geeze, you guys are really trying to screw the poor guy. I have some brand new stainless ones I rigged up with stainless springs and washers and brass nuts, I would sell you all six for that much. PM me and ill give ya my PayPal number. :)

P.S. And if you act within the next 15 minutes, I'll even throw in a set of exhaust donuts. Hows that for a deal?

Crazy! I had the very same thing happen the other day! Only I lost all 3 bolts! Usually you can never get exhaust bolts loose, but to have them fall out is something. Guess I'll have to check under the diaper more often.

    Cheers!

Had an exhaust leak that would go away after car was warm. Turned out a nut holding the exhaust manifold had come off. Put a new one one and problem fixed. So relieved.

No more chitty chitty bang bang VW sounding exhaust.

It's funny how when you drive these cars how aware you become of every squeak and rattle they make. Just remember, paranoia is the feeling of total awareness. :)

Sounds like a classic case of blinker fluid gone flat. Time to replace.

I took a better look this morning and found a small crack in the muffler as well.I removed the muffler and found another two smaller cracks. If it wasn't stainless I would have just trashed it and bought a new one so I tig welded the cracks and refitted it.I had to replace one of the donut gaskets so I went to a local muffler shop and brought my old gasket and asked the guy if he could give me another gasket. The first thing he asked me was "What type of car is it from?"(Hate when they ask that) the guy gave me a 2" gasket and charged me $5.I refitted the gasket and leak tested. All is well and the noise has gone.A happy and cheap ending :D

Yeah you have a point but after having rebuilt the engine, the last thing I wanted to hear was some irregular noise coming from the motor :D
