I started a search of the archives but so far have not found out if doing a syncro replacement on this car myself is advisable considering the potential difficulty. I have no idea (yet) what is involved but would have no trouble diving into this myself. I've done Model A Ford's, a Corvair and an MGB stick in the past so I have some insight (I hope!).

Can replacing 2nd & 3rd syncros be replaced reasonably easily for a "part time" mechanic?
I have access to a lift to work it from below.
Does the engine need to be shifted or removed?

Any push towards a procedural link would be appreciated too.

    Thanks,

    Bob R.

I'm down in San Diego . .. have a gearbox apart right now if you want to see what you're in for.

WOW! I'd love to, but that's a bit far for me to go right now. Any pictures?

I presume you have to pull the engine for this syncro thing then?

You might be able to get the g'box apart in the car . . . you have to pull the input and output shafts out to swap the synchro's . . .. you sure it's not just some adjustment that's causing the problem? The gearbox I just pulled out apart only needs 2nd and 4th replacing . . . think it'd be a PITA in the car but pulling the engine to do it isn't so easy either.

Thinking about it, I think there's probably too much frame, etc. in the way to get the shafts out . . . they come out the driver's side and the input shaft is pretty long . . . extends all the way out to the drop gears so I think there's only a couple inches before you're hitting frame if you try to pull it in the car . .. probably should think about pulling the engine if it really needs synchro's but don't think you should have to seperate engine and gearbox . . . will have to remove the big sandwich plate that between the bellhousing and block.

Got plenty of pic's . .. I figured Pizzaman had plenty of pic's in his thread . .. let me know what you want to see.

    Good luck,

    Sean

Hmmmmm...... Sounds like I may be able to drop the trans cover and look at the situation before making a final decision on which way I'll need to go (adjustment vs. bad syncro wear, right? Maybe Verell would know if the frame is in the way out the driver's side of what you are describing too. How long is the input shaft? I'd like any pictures you have showing the cluster and syncros in place. Thanks.

Years ago, I had the trans on my 308 GT4 rebuilt without pulling the engine. It did required suspending the engine on a hoist, disconnecting the engine mounts and moving things around alot. In retrospec, it would have been easier to pull the engine. Also, keep in mind the GT4 has more engine compartment room than the 308 GTS /B. Plan on pulling the engine. If you need to replace the syncos, might as well replace them all, as well as the bearings and bushings while you're in there.
