Listen, you need to find a peaceful way to deal with this. This woman is going to be with you for a while from the sounds of it. Anything negative you say about her will likely turn your wife against you. In laws have a funny way of screwing up marriages. And unfortunately, it looks like she is living with you...

You know what they say - you don't marry a person, you marry a family...and that often comes with baggage. I don't have an easy answer for you...lousy situation...

You are saving a ton of money by having here there (5k a month almost). She probably knew she wasn't supposed to do what she did, but given the background you relayed to us, she probably thought that everyone hates her anyway, so maybe my grandson will like me if I give him these presents. Who knows, but the steps she took to say she was sorry, especially if she's never reacted that way before, seem important. I think you need to buy her a nice present for Christmas, and maybe show her some love and respect that she apparently has never had in her own family. That will probably go a lot farther than the opposite reaction. Again, just my 2 cents. Merry Christmas.

Kick her butt out of the house. If shes as smart as she thinks, she will be able to survive on the streets. There's no better way for a marriage to get ruined than to throw a MIL in the mix. She needs to know her role, or get out.

    The ultimate revenge :D

My fav word :D Best used on MIL's.

Sounds a lot like my mother in law. I feel your pain my friend. Glad she appologized. I'd imagine it sure makes you feel a lot better, despite all the crap. Even though MIL's are annoying as hell, we still love em, for some strange reason :)

Bill, you seem like a very caring and giving human being. I think it's time you learned a little Mandarin/Chinese. Given the brief history lesson of your MIL past I'd say this will earn you enormous respect from her. You've obviously treated her better than her own children and I suspect the olive branch toward better communication between you two will yield dividends. I know with your busy schedule this is the last thing you’d want to be doing but, as she is raising your son and taking care of the house she is still working seven days a week. I think she’d be blown away by the effort and suspect that any collateral bitterness that’s been heading your way would probably stop.

She might even start wearing those dammed boots. I hope your Christmas gets better.

Child care, maid, cook, laundress, 14 hour days........$100/week?!?!?!? Plus you don't speak her language and doesn't sound like you are trying. I would guess she feels like a slave or sweatshop worker and is revolting. I would seriously look into this, she knows she's being used.

My $0.02 opinion. You now have $0.04 total of advice. :)

I've been learning for 6 years .. but since my wife speaks it very very little, learning has been slow going to put it mildly. I can get by just fine in a restaurant as long as they speak Cantonese, I can have very short-worded discussions with my MIL, we can talk about my son in various ways (changing diaper, giving him a bath, washing his hands/face, giving him medicine, changing clothes, etc), but learning is slow going. I want very much for my son to be bilingual so I have a deep desire to learn, I just need better teachers.

Yeah, it sounds like a lot ... but.

    1) We have not asked her to clean, cook, or do laundry - she's an extremely motherly person in this regard. As far as the cleaning, she's rather anal about it. With the cooking, she eats like the world is about to fall into an all encompassing famine. That Japanese hotdog guy has got nothing on this woman.

    2) $100 a week is more than she ever made - and we cover all her expenses. We pay for her supplemental health coverage (now that my wife got all that worked out - took almost a year to do so). We cover food, transportation, reimbursement for anything she buys during the week and on the weekends she can go home to China-town or she can stay with us and we'll take her wherever we go (she's never had a car in her life, never traveled, so going anywhere is always an adventure to her). Her apartment in China-town is paid for by my FIL so the cash she gets is play money. On weekends she's not with us, she blows most if not all of it in Atlantic City anyway.

    3) She gets a bonus a few times a year - (she'll get a grand this Xmas).

    4) I've been dying to give her a raise (and I occasionally slip her some dough) ... my wife won't let me. (See previous comment about Atlantic City)

I don't know what to tell ya Bill. Maybe it's time for your wife to finally learn as well. I'm just pulling at straws...
