Thinking of placing the test pipes on my 512 TR, she has a Tubi now and not really loud enough. My question is with the test pipes how loud is it (Read obnoxious to my wife) in the cabin at HWY speed in 5th gear?

    Thanks Andrew

It's not loud at all. The TR's don't seem to be loud cars at all even with straight pipes I have heard. I have a tubi with test pipes all the way through and it's still pretty quite in my opinion. But then you are talking about a guy that came from a Viper..so maybe I am deaf.

What will really make it loud is put in test pipes in place of the pre-cats or gut the pre-cats of all the corrugated honeycomb looking material. There's lots of it in there and it's not particularily easy to remove. There's been another thread on this not too long ago.

I had test pipes first, added the Tubi and it was not loud. Then I got to the pre-cats, and wow! It's not bad cruising down the road at 3000 rpm until you hit the gas and accelerate.

Have you done any before-and-after dyno testing to determine HP gains with the Tubi and catless exhaust? How about seat-of-the-pants improvement? The latter may be hard to quantify as loud cars often "feel" faster, even though they may not be.

My 512 TR has Tubi, Hyper-Flow cats, and Hyper-Flow pre-cats.

It's REALLY loud. Sounds like an airplane. The sound is unbelievable. I would guess that it's the pre-cats that did it.

    Larry,

No chance to do a dymo test. Seat-of-the-pants does feel stronger but as you said sometimes more sound makes you think you're going faster. Going through an underpass at full acceleration sounds like it's going to collapse the structure which is an exhilerating feeling!

I don't believe the car needs any more power until the differential housing has been changed from the welded type to forged housing. So I'm very cautious about the circumstances where I use full throttle.

I have a 92 512TR with straight pipes, no cats, and a tubi rumore (meant to be louder than standard tubi). Noise is great but not loud enough still imo! I drive with the windoews open most of the time. Even at speed you can still have a conversation (ok you need to talk quite loud!)

I don't have a 512TR, but just a lowly Testarossa with the long-discontinued Borla system on it. This system does away with the precats and cats. Each header has it's own pipe, straight through muffler (small stainless glasspack style), and tail pipe. You'd think it would be very loud, but I think it has about the same noise level as a Tubi with test pipes, and with the precats still in place. I'm tempted to remove the mufflers and simply weld in straight pipes in their place. Like many I would like the car to be fairly loud, but with a good sound. I worry that it may end up sounding "tinny" or "cackly" like a redneck's pickup truck. Anyone have any experiences with true straight pipes on a flat-12 car? If so please describe it.....thanks....

Here's a video clip, my car is the second one (grigio metallic Testa) to take off. This will give you an idea of what the Borla exhaust souds like leaving from a stop.....

I've got a non-cat sport system on my '86 Testarossa that I got direct from Stainless Exhaust Specialists www.stainless-exhaust.com and its way loud enough! Excellent price too, I paid £950- and fitted it myself although they would have done it for a nominal price if I wanted them to. They make great systems for all high performance cars and are much better value - IMO - than some of the other 'popular' recommendations.

Contact Don (the owner) on [email protected] , he was knocking up some DB9 road / race systems when I was last in. Very tasty.

I ran a little FCA afternoon drive up in the GA mountains with a 512 TR that had this setup a couple years back. I was behind him most of the time and I cannot begin to describe how wonderful it sounded. It was easily one of the best exhaust notes I have ever heard on any Ferrari. I LOVED it

I have X-OST and Test Pipes... sounds pretty loud, as soon as you hit 4000rpm, it sounds insane. Has a very raspy high pitch sound, on the hwy, people hear me from like 8-10 cars behind.

Engine also runs a lot cooler with the test pipes.

here is a clip, drive by on the hwy, downshift from 4th to 3rd to 2nd, upshift to 3rd....

This one has a pretty good exhaust note on my car. Pretty good video as well

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkaGj8NKPVE&feature=user

Note the cold fire smoke. The car will run rich on start up. Both in the trailer, and on the street shots were with the car stone cold. After she warms up, no more raw fuel.

I did not have the rich condition (at least through the exhaust) when I had the cats on.

The car also has a chip.

    Tommy,

I am 99.9% positive that you are referring to my car. I remember that drive through the mountains -it was much fun. Thanks for the compliment. The car is equipped with those "test pipes" and a Tubi and a slightly retuned engine (chips) to bring out the full effect.

    Cheers,
    Brian

I recently put Larini test pipes to replace my precats and main cats with a stock exhaust. At idle it only sounds a little louder, but normally I don't think anyone notice. The car now runs better too (my main cats were bad). The only thing bad is the smell. Don't let it idle for a few minutes in your indoor garage. Its bad for your health
