My first post. Going thru some old slides I found some pic. of a Ferrari I imported to So.Cal. in 1957 to help pay my way thru college. I only owned it for 5 months. Took it to Riverside Raceway for the opening press event in 1957. I have no clue where the car is now, but I have about 10 slides and if the existing owner needs some info. as to when it was imported etc. I would love hear from them??? I will try to post one pic. 1oldf.... George

Beautiful car and a great piece of history you had George. I don't recall ever seeing that windshield treatment on a Barchetta.

    George,

Welcome aboard! I'm sure that the members here will have your old car identified with certainty in the next few days (once they are back from the holidays). The California license plates should get the question answered quickly.

Out of curiosity, do you remember where or from whom you bought it?

Also, just to throw my hat in the guessing ring, I'm going to guess 032 MT.

    Regards,

    Art S.

More info. As you can see lisc.#JLH176 1956 with red tag. It is for sure 4.1L, Barchetta Touring 340 America Spider. During my college years I had a friend, Michael Vernola who lived in Milan and he would buy used cars and ship them to me here in L.A. In 56,57,and 58 we brought in 20 some cars. Many one off Fiats, Nardis, Abarths, 48,49,50 2.5L Alfasand as I recall three Ferraris. The 340, a silver 212 Vignalli cpe. and a 56 250GT cpe. No records?? The 340 was shipped to LA and I picked it up at the harbor.....If someone can use the lisc.# JLH176 to get DMV records it may give us a clue. Thanks for all the input........George

The 340 Tourings were - 0114A (in Switzerland most of its life), 0116A (in France), 0118A (in the US from new with Spear), 0120A (in the states with Rutherford), 0124A (in the US from new with Kimberly), 0144A (in the Phillipines). So if it's an original 340 and you imported it, it could only be 0114A or 0116A, but I don't know if those cars ever made it here. Perhaps the 340 motor's not original to the car?

    Hmm.

    Hi Peter,

George say :"of a Ferrari I imported to So.Cal. in 1957"....but wasn't 0032 MT already in the States(J.McAfee drive it 1952 to 1954..)at that time ?

And s/n 0114A couldn't be because this car was/is still in Switzerland ..

regards and look forward to more interesting opinions.

Very interesting. The ad is for s/n 0084E, but I doubt that is the very car we're looking for.

The 340 arrived at L.A. harbor approx. July 1957 from Italy. It was shown and driven at the press preview and first opening at Riverside Raceway Calif in Aug. 1957 driven by Pete Woods. After 2 demo. laps the oil breathers were dirty and oil pressure built up to where several gallons of oil pucked out over hot headers making for a huge black cloud down the back straight. Nothing broke and after cleaning the breathers all was OK. Every dime I had at the time was in that car so to have it survive not broken was a blessing. After the Riverside fiasco I broke a ring gear and the car sat for two weeks until a fellow in Newport Beach who was restoring a Ferrari Cpe. was kind enough to give me his ring gear which I replaced in a month after being shipped from Italy. As I come up with more info I will post.........many years, short memory..............George

    Same here!

    Great pics and story, George.

When you have time, some comments on your ownership experience would be appreciated by all, I'm sure.

I was 7 yrs old in '57, but was already into cars and knew the name Ferrari; think I had a plastic model of an open Barchetta.
