I need to sell my other car, an '03 Porsche 996 C4S. I'm debating about listing it private party, that seems like a big hassle dealing with sightseers and other strangers. Any suggestions for someone that might purchase them for a reasonable price in the area? Should I just try the porsche dealers? I doubt carmax would want a 911

I realize this is not ferrari specific ;) If I've broken any rules, just feel free to delete my post.

    Thanks!

You should try the Porsche club classifieds, Rennlist.com classifieds and Pelican parts classifieds. Or you can find a member of the Porsche club you trust who can try to market it for you. good Luck. jon

Recently took a car to Carmax for the first time - they offered wholesale for my Audi A6 Avant. Outside of peak times, the appraisal takes roughly half an hour. I decided not to sell, but it's certainly convenient.

Carmax will buy any car. A friend of mine bought an 85 911 Carerra from them for like $9,000 (high miles) that they took in as a "sale only". Good luck!

Since this is a borderline ad, let's go all the way.

    What's your asking price?

how about some details on the car itself and a picture or two. There are several folks here looking for cars all the time, and more than a dealer or two from the area stops in.

I (ahem) may also be looking for a car soon, and this might fit the bill, so I'm not exactly a neutral observer here.

Actually, it should also get listed on FerrariAds.com, the listing is free since you are silver subscribed. Viewing there is free of course to all members here.

That's too high end for Carmax. They typically won't put anything on their lot over $50k or so. Try Prestige Imports. http://www.prestige-motors.com/

Well, since I have moderator approval, sure :). I'm asking $52500. A similar mileage one in similar condition went for 49K in the list above, so I think it is competitive pricing, but I'm willing to entertain anything reasonable.

    Description:

The Car is a 2003 Carrera 4S in Polar Silver and Graphite Grey full
leather interior. Mileage is 21K Miles. Original options on the
    window sticker include:

    Polar Silver Special order color
    Xenon Headlamps
    Heated Front Seats
    Wheel Caps with Colored Crests
    BOSE High end audio
    Alu/Lthe Shifter, brake handle

    Original Sticker $88,280

I added the following on top of that:

    Porsche OEM Sports Exhaust (PSE)
Polar Silver center console and AC Surround
    B&M Short shifter
    Instrument silver surround rings

The one thing I'd say, is there are a few rock chips on the front bumper. If I had kept the car, I would have resprayed it this year. Other than that it is perfect

That will be a good side effect, my garage is very small and it is hard to fit both cars in there. But this is a financially motivated sale. Can use the cash for better things at this point.

FYI, current Manheim values are the best indicator of what a car is worth. Someone has already posted some examples above. However, you should expect less than the figures posted above if you are going to trade/sell your car to a dealer. A dealer will need to professionally detail the car, likely spend some money on reconditioning, pay a sellers fee, pay to transport the car to the auction, and of course (as is fair) make some profit on the car. If you are looking to get more or equal to what they are selling for at auction, you will need to sell it privately.
Car looks great, love the color. Good luck with the sale. If you really want to sell the car to a dealer, you will be able to do so in 1 day. Even if the dealer is not a buyer for the car they know wholesalers who would be.

Don't mean to be argumentative, just trying to learn how things work. Wouldn't the costs a dealer incurs you outline such as detailing reconditioning etc, be there also for cars they purchase at auction? For example if I trade my car in to some dealer who just auctions it, the buyer of my car at the auction will need to prep it. The auction price is what the buyer thinks the unprep'd car is worth, so why should a private seller to a dealer expect less than what that dealer would be willing to pay at an auction? I don't really get it

    Thanks!

I'm no expert, but my understanding is there are 2 common reasons dealers take a car to the Manheim Auctions:

    - they got a trade-in car that they don't want to re-sell (wrong type, too much damage, too cheap for their type of customer, too expensive for their type of customer, too much inventory of that type already on the lot, etc.)

    - they've had the car for sale as a used car for too many months and they don't want to make the next payment (flooring financing time is up, bank pay-off is due, beyond their own time limit, etc.)

So, in the second scenario, the dealer has already paid the detailing/prep costs in the car being auctioned.

Anyone else know other reasons why dealers take cars to the auctions?

You are forgetting the middleman. Most dealers do not sell their trades at auction. They sell them to a wholesaler, who sells them at an auction. The car will be prepped by the wholesaler for "wholesale sale/condition" before the auction. This will include the costs I outlined above. Any reconditioning will likely be cosmetic, if needed. They might spray the bumper if will help the car show better, etc. This is why you will receive less then auction value if you sell your car to a dealer who is going to wholesale it.
Once a different retail dealer buys your car at auction they will bring it back to their dealership and sell it to the public. All reputable dealers will perform a full inspection of the car once it arrives at their business. At this point, the dealer who bought the car with the intention of retailing it to the public will incur the full cost of reconditioning the car to a retail level, as well as a buyers fee at the auction, and transportation costs to ship the car back.

If the dealer you are trading the car into wants to keep the car themselves and retail it to the public, they will only have to pay to recondition the car to a retail level. It didn't sound like you were able to find a dealer who was looking to purchase the car and keep it in inventory, so I was just helping to explain some of the extra costs involved in wholesaling a vehicle.

Manheim is not a final dumping ground for unwanted cars. Often times people hear auction and assume bad things. That is not accurate. Think of it more as the stock market for car dealers. People fly/drive from all over the East Coast to purchase cars at Manheim (Manheim, PA) Manheim Auctions also owns the majority of other dealer auctions across the county, however one the best and biggest is right here in our area. The best used cars in the region end up there. There are much lower level (junk auctions) out there, but Manheim PA is not one of them.
Virtually every used car will be sold at auction at sometime during its life. It is likely that a car like this will only be one of dozens of nice late model Porsches brought to Manheim PA any given week. However, this car has low miles and is 4S so it is definitely a stand out among the average car. Why don't you take it to a Porsche dealer. I'd be surprised if they would not be a buyer for this car. Especially if they serviced the car as well. Have you tried that? You might be happy with the number they give you.

    Good luck. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks Adam, very helpful! Always learning on Fchat.... And getting excellent advice. I was planing on going to my local dealer (Tischer) who has been servicing it. That was going to be my first stop. If they offer something reasonable (which I realize will be quite a bit less than my asking price), I'll probably just sell it to them.

I don't recall the name of the dealer that used to be Cherner on Falls and River Roads in Potomac. It moved to Shady Grove Road, I think. I sold them one of my Boxsters, as they offered more than the Porsche dealers and they had many Porsches for sale on their lot.
