    Big Job...? yes.

But,,, Not so Big anymore.... (ha ha)
Block is OK, Crank Shaft OK, maybe even the One Connecting rod is OK...

    7 of 8 liners to be Re-Bored.
Liner 8 Need to BUY. (Anyone have one laying around,,, cheap...?)

    New Main bearings
    New Rod Bearings
    Gasket KIt
    8 JE Pistons,,,,
    16 valve guides.
    Heads done Locally, (Whew)

    See photos,

See tools of the Trade to split the engine cover. (Don't break it.)
See the Other half of that piston that grenaded. It is loged in between the two journal nuts and the rear oil galley. Nothing broke. (whew)
The oil filter and pick-up screen did their job of not letting any metal fragments enter the oil system. And the Front cover internals were protected by the fact that they are located in a different part of the oil sump.. Thus, oil pump is OK and the gears are ok.(whew again)

She can be saved. I have the technology...

Now , I need to get the front Pully off.

    Ciao

Great pics and walkthrough and kind of demistifies the whole business of stripping and rebuilding these engines.

It's funny how people get worried about doing this to these engine when there are much more complex engines about that get rebuilt everyday. If you've rebuilt two Fiat twin cam engines, then you've done a 308 engine too or as good as.

As my first year of Ferrari ownership comes to a close I'd say ferrarichat and threads like this is the most important resource for us all.

    : )

Good luck with the rebuild, although it looks like you've had plenty of good luck by not damaging the heads and block too much!

    Lee,

I wanted a 308 GT4, but they were out of my price range. (yours looks nice)
Mondial-8's are so underrated... Plus Mondials are so easy to work on. (Thank you Enzo.)

Ciao,,, (hello again), , I’m back on the project Mondial 8.

    While I’m waiting on parts and new tools,,, I managed to;

Replace the glass in the drivers mirror… $ 20.00
Cut out air injection ports from my Euro headers.. Ready to weld.
Find and replace fuel vent lines. (blue silicon hose)
And, damn, see my cheap plastic cam belt cogs,,, I have a set from a 328 I can make fit,

Or F-Chat member “SMG2” Scott,,, can make me a set of a new “Improved” modern style. (PM him)

It's funny how over here (at least in some car scene) we like to go US style and over there some of you guys like to go EU. I guess it's about being different : )

I've got all clear on the front (with orange bulbs for the turn signals) and all reds on the rear and the law hasn't stopped me yet.

All head studs out,,, then SNAP....!

Broke off a drill in a broken Bell Housing stud.
    Doh!
(It's always the easy stuff that bites you.)

I had to come in from the top to snap that bugger off,,,
then I pushed the drill through, then snapped it off again.. (whew)

Next I drilled out the stud,,, like I started to do two days ago, added a little heat... Nothing yet
    ,,,

    ,
    ,
it needs to soak penetrating oil through the New back side access.
    Tomorrow...?

Good luck with the project, it's not for the beginning wrencher fer shure.

    BTW, re:
Umm, hate to bring this up, but I believe in another post you said that was Si coolant line?
If so, it won't stand up to gasolene, will swell, soften, & become very weak.

Unfortunately, silicone hoses in general aren't fuel rated.

    OK,
    here is the scenario.

When I was test running the motor, with the car up on blocks,
#6 rod bearing wiped, piston losses cooling, grenades.
Rod punches hole in liner #6, liner #3 stops the cranks rotation, sacrificing its’ base.
Piston #3 has damage on its skirt.

    2 Borgo pistons = 289.00
    1 ring set (Ferrari) = 245.00
    -or-

    8 new forged Pistons (with rings) = $1100.00 (Just $ 566.00 more, , ,, or about a 25 % addition.)

    -and-
    2 liners = 636.00
    1 rod = 225.00
8 rod bearing sets = $ ???.00 (Mains look fine)

    Total,, only $3,000.00 usa
    :)

It looks like the liners came out so I guess the puller worked? I decided to do mine in the press so I never actually tested it before I sent it.

    Mark,

Thanks for the 8 QV rods,,,
they are going in for reconditioning next week.

Front wings off (very easy to do) clean out gravel and such.
Remove any surface rust with a wire brush, treat with phosphoric acid, primer with SEM self etching primer,, follow with SEM high build primer.
Ready for one coat of PPG Nero Urethane.
(Add a little undercoat to the spots where water likes to pool.)

Now, I am ready to weld up the crease in the drivers door.

    (to be continued.)
