    Dear Comrades,

With the New Year upon us I am thinking that I may have left it a little too late to become a doctor. Has anyone any views on how long it takes to become a doctor?

Is it easier to specialise right from the beginning. For example, if one were to dedicate oneself to just one part of the anatomy would the training period be shorter? I have examined a few women over the years and am thinking that with this experience already in place that this would assist in reducing the time likely to be taken in becoming a fully fledged gynaecologist.

    Please help.

    With warm regards,

I have heared of a gynaecologist who could adjust the valves of his Ferrari through the exhaust pipes.

    Graham, go for it !

In England, your looking at 5 years of medical school (trusting that your A levels from circa 1914 are accepted), and a further 3-5 years as a resident before you are accepted as a full fledged Consultant.

In the US, you are looking at 4 yrs of University, followed by 4 years of medical school, followed by 3-7 yrs of residency before you can practice.

My only concern is that by the time you complete your training you will be ready to retire old boy !

I recommend it wholeheartedly though, the career satisfaction is worth it....I hear its almost as good as used car sales :)

I know a couple of Gynecologists.

My impression from this is that some things are best left to the imagination.

there are many forms of becoming a doctor... not just the MD route... I know many people who have received their PHD @ 50, and 60 yrs old+ (albeit, some of the older gentleman already had 2, and 3 PHD's when they received an additional one... and compared to MD's, if you are brilliant, and have a lot of time; you can get a PHD fairly quickly....

    hehe

    good luck, Graham ;)

I don't understand the desire to be a gynecologist... kinda like a Ferrari:

It's fun to drive, but I don't EVER want to deal with any of the problems associated with maintenance!

Now, if it's a medical doctor you want to become, the road is long and tedious. However, if you want Dr. before your name, it takes all of 3 seconds to type it, and a few minutes of self-promotion on the web...just ask dretceterini, our "distinguished Cambridge alum" with ahem "multiple PhDs" and ahem "a glorious past that includes teaching Stephen Hawking a few things". Ahem.

My friends brother-in-law and sister are both gyno's. I've only heard a few stories, but damn it's hilarious and disgusting at the same time.

Not sure I'd be wanting to have sex, let alone look at my wifes vage after working all day.

I'm a 'freelance' gynecologist, I saw no need for school or all the cost involved for the degree to do what I have been doing for 30+yr's and I work for free !
