    Dear Comrades,

Is the market for registration numbers similar to that within the United Kingdom? Are they perceived as anything like as valuable as they are in the UK, and are there registration numbers dealers just as there are here?

    Happy New Year From England.

    With kind regards,

    512 Tea Are

    Dear Comrade PAP348,

The market for registration numbers within the UK is absolutely gigantic with prices that are wholly commensurate - here's a link to one of many such dealers that trade registration numbers: www.Regtransfers.co.uk

    Happy New Year!

    With kind regards,

    512 Tea Are

Ohh u mean number PLATES! :p

The heritage plates ie: only numbers no letters are worth alot. Single digit will get u close to $1mill. double digit about half a mill. 3 digit around $150k. 4digit around $50k Tho this is state dependant and eastern states will get more money.

The personal plates ie: any combo of letters or numbers upto 6-11 characters depending on state, while ask for alot in the classifieds, they seem not to sell as well maybe $50-100k highest seen for these ones.

If you ask Roni he will give you FI-360 for $5k :p

No dealers. Just sell them online or via auction, if you don't have them on a car you have to return them to the RTA and pay a holding fee per year if you want to keep them.

The Australian market is similar to the US, where "vanity" plates are cheap and worthless. You pay a few hundred dollars for most plates and that's all they're worth, despite the dreamers who advertise them for much more.

The UK is the complete opposite, due to stupid government regulation. My car had 5UKX "sucks" on it in the UK, which was sold for 9000 pounds. This plate in NSW would cost $300. I thought it was completely vulgar.

The only collectible plates here are low denomination numeral plates, which were originally issued when there were few cars on the road. In the beginning, the first car registered in New South Wales had the number plate "1", the second car "2" and so on. Plates like this, in most states, ranging up to "9999" are valuable and appreciating investments, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Well in Perth i have LOONEY as my plate, and was looking to get it in QLD and it is like $2k to get a custom plate there, so not worth it IMO, was only $300 here, so is OK for a larf.

why specifically do you ask Mr Tea Are?

    Comrade,
Prices and rules vary from state to state, in the Australian Capital Territory an overview can be found here:
    http://www.rego.act.gov.au/assets/PDFs/Non-standard%20number%20plates%20flyer.pdf

Most valuable are numeric plates, either 1, 2 or 3 digit - as a guide 3 digit ACT plates start at around 6K and go rapidly up from there if you have an interesting number, for instance 355, 911, 308 or my favourite: 666

2 digit ACT plates are perhaps 50K plus, but I have not seen any sold in the past few years.

In the ACT , once you "buy" plates , there is no ongoing fee to the RTA, ( unlike other states ), also we can get plates with 7 characters, not 6 like the rest of the country.

Low digit plates have been a solid investment in the past few years, with prices increasing perhaps 15% anually.

    Cheers
    Michael

Are they different in each state? Say someone has 1 in Melborune, (I think it's an E320 MB) could someone in SA or NSW have 1 as well, or are they nationwide?

Each state / territory issues their own plates, so each number can ( and is ) issued in each territory.
