I hope this is the right section for this question, so here it goes. Has anyone ever painted black crinkle paint over the top of old crinkle paint with good results? I have a part that is not easy to remove so I am thinking about masking off and painting it in place, right over the old crinkle paint. Is this possible or do I need to strip the old paint?

I've never tried it but the cheap and easy test would be to try it on some scrap first. Either paint something and try it again a few weeks later or maybe find some old electronic equipment and try it on that. Sorry couldn't be more help.

I've done it on my airbox but not while still on the car. I pulled it, cleaned it and painted right over the top of the old paint. It came out looking just fine. In fact I just touched up a couple areas last time I had it off. Didn't paint the whole thing but just the top that I didn't seem to be able to get clean.

Remember to get the best crinkle the part should be warm and kept warm after painting. This time I used a small heater on top of the workbench where I was painting.

You really should strip the old paint…because it’s old paint and you have no way to know if it will stay adhered 10 more years, 10 more days or 10 more minutes. Also how do you ever get all the dirt and oil out of the wrinkles on the old paint? How do you get the shiny paint scuffed up for proper adhesion down in the wrinkles? It only takes about 30 minutes to strip the thing with paint remover and a soft wire bush, and then you know what you have.

I just bought a pair of TR heads and the cam covers were obviously sprayed over old the old paint. I say obviously because the top coat is pealing and flaking off......

Any time you paint new paint over old paint, there's a good chance that as the new paint dries & shrinks, it will literally pull the old paint away from the surface. The older the 'old' paint is, the more likely to peel. Wrinkle paint shrinks more than most other paints so draw your own conclusion.

Heck, you can always try & if it doesn't work, pull the part & do it the best way. Just be aware of the risks mk e has pointed out.

Powercoating is the only way to go, I did my cam covers in powercoat and I was thinking of wrinkle paint. I'm now gald I did them in PC.

Seamus--I painted the expansion tank on my old '85 QV with heat resistant semi- gloss paint and it turned out great. I think that I used paint designed for radiators, obtained from the Eastwood catalog.

Mark--I see that you bought TR heads. Does this mean that you have a new project going?

Doc! I tough you were lost to the dark side forever with your NSX purchase :)

I do have a new project. I'm trying very hard to single handedly redefine foolishness.

Mark--I may be lost, but I'm still enjoying the NSX. However, I still peruse the Ferrari ads.

Unbelievable project, man! If anyone can do you it, you can. It will be awesome when you're finished.
