bubbles in oil, is this bad?

Mine does that too. 24K and no problems. By bubbles yoiu mean kind of foamy on the dip stick, right? No worries.

 

I see where you are going with this. You are concerned about coolant in the oil.
If you are starting the car and running only for a short period & then shutting it down then the oil will have excess condensation which could result in small bubbles. No issue.

But if you drive the car (or warm it up) till its full hot (the cooling fans turn on around 190 degrees) then you should'nt really see any bubbles in the oil UNLESS the oil has been overfilled.....in that situation you can get foaming. If thats the case then just make sure you do not overfill the oil when you change your oil. A lot of people make the mistake of overfilling these dry sump cars.

Last time I checked my oil full hot /shut down/immediate check = no bubbles.

In any case, if I were concerned I would drain the oil and examine it (its probably just old/dirty or overfilled).....you probably will find that its OK.

 

I bet you guys are using the Shell Ultra Helix? Common to that oil, I don't believe that is one of it's better attributes. Regardless, I doubt it is the end of the world... You can do a search as it has been discussed a couple times before.

If you are reading high right after shutdown, then you are overfilled. It should read somewhere between min and max on the stick. It reads lower after 30 seconds, because the oil is draining out of the remote sump and back to the engine. It will read nothing if you wait a few minutes.

 

Yep, helix for 24K no problems, slightly foamy though.

 

It is normal to have small tiny bubbles in your oil, mostly common when the oil is hot. from 365 to 430, they all (most) seem to that.

 

Did you ever blow bubbles when you were a kid?

Agreed, first thing I thought was overfill. Also, are you using any additives? They can cause foaming too. Oh, and I was thinking about your viscosity - it is too light for your driving style (like thin oil for your very very heavy right footwork).

BTW, I check my oil after bringnig the car up to operating temperature, but not after a (vigorous) drive.

Cuneo, the bubbles is normal for Shell Ultra Helix so don't worry. If you have read the other threads about it, people claim (I have not opinion, as I am not versed on the subject) that this is a fault of Helix; that oil should not foam. But it is normal for this Helix to foam, good or bad. If you change it with more Helix, it will do the same thing. So don't bother with an oil change unless you are due.
