With the proper equipment set up yes but I would not trust a sticky pod ..... vacuum suction cups are the way to go. As far as the officer pacing you could ask when the officers car was last calibrated and checked for accuracy just as radar and laser guns have to be checked periodically.

Filmtools.com has some great mounts for cars

Best of luck with the tickets

WOW those tickets suck and were issued most likely as a result of the officers personal anger problems as so sadly most cops have. It is the most stressful job in the world!

Anyway, I was behind you and you were not speeding. I guess he figures you are from out of state so you wont fight it.
I never knew it was illegal to film either. Whenever I take my car out there must be 20 cars commiting the same so called offense as you with their cell phones filming and snapping pictures. Anyway that camera setup you had was real cool.

I also was the only other car to get pulled over, but luckily I didnt get a ticket.

Posted on the bridges and tunnels there is actually a sign that states 'No Photography', but who ever saw one of those on the side of the highway? Gotta be BS...Are they really worried that some terrorist jerkoff's grand scheme is to blow up a few hundred feet of the turnpike?

Reading the statute, it would appear that the failure to get prior approval to film might be the kicker.. Given that it sounds like the car was pretty loaded with cameras would push it past the simple guy with a point-and-shoot..

Sorry to hear abt your troubles Robb... as an avid photog myself, Im curious to know if the LEO was State, Local, or other?

Jason and I have hung out of many a window to snap shots. Im sure that statue has been on the books forever, yet rarely enforced - wondering now if this is a new angle for LEO's to hassle run participants. Your hood cam probably instigated the whole mess. I recall a certain "student driver" getting interrogated for filming on the shoulder of an NJ highway during one of our runs, but I think he just got a warning.

Regarding the speed pacing... unless he has in-car video footage of the pace, it will just be your word against his.

Good luck! Pls keep us updated.

    Hey Greg,
It was in fact a State Officer. The court date is coming up very soon, and I will keep everyone in the loop as to the outcome. Does anyone have any recommendations for a local Attorney? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

all moving violations go on your driving record, regardless of state. For some states, like Maryland and others, out of state "points" do not transfer over (unless its a dui), however the moving violation will be on your record. So, just b/c there's no transfer of "points", don't be fooled into thinking that your insurance will not go up.

I was there too. The LEO stopped us because we were the only ones he could catch, because we stopped on the shoulder :) But now I understand that this was an illegal action according to that "hi-way law".

I didn't know about that - good info, thx.

if youre video was rolling, you might have footage that you were driving under normal conditions, at least that would get you out of the speeding ticket.

Don't sweat it, you'll get out it........

He's an attorney in central VA and might be able to help you out as far as Virginia is concerned. He just helped me out by recommending a friend of his in the area where I got pinched.

    Thanks again fou!!!

Sorry to hear about this, sounds like the officer was just on a power trip and pissed off about all these cars driving by, jealous also played a part. It seems to happen whenever we have a run, hah. If you need an excellent NJ Traffic attourney send me a PM. My brother-in-law is one of the best, has gotten myself and my friends out of everything we've needed him for so far, including street racing.

    1) Pace tickets are fairly easy to have lawyered away, especially if you actually have video of the time in question.

    2) It's not illegal to film or photograph anything on any public highways. That said, just about every cop I've ever seen tosses a fit when you shove a camera in their face and aren't obviously media, and hence like to get all sorts of creative in their interpretation of the law. This ticket should also be able to get dismissed.

That being said, very obvious externally mounted cameras are not wise. While it's perfectly legal to strap on a 35mm rig to your hood if you feel the need (and I have, without permits, no issues), you will attract attention of people who are generally ignorant of some degree of the laws they're charged to enforce, and for whatever reason don't like you on that particular day. You're better off keeping cameras inside the car, or very inconspicuous.

Oh, and on a technical note, sticky pods are a really bad idea external at even legal highway speeds. They can and will come off. External mounts of any complexity really need a vacuum cup and bar setup.

You'll need production and liability policy to get a video permit.

Since we're sharing cop videos, here's one of my favorites. Shot at "Phil the Sticker Guy's" 30th birthday. In the driveway.

Did I get an education from this topic, Makes you wonder what the big deal is . I can almost guarantee I had more interactions with LEO , ( In my Vette Days )because of speeding than most here . After some time you just get tired , it sems like you become a target becuse of your vehicle and or pack your with .I had just given up , Sit there silently weather I was right or wrong . I have since then considered video and audio of th passenger compartment to video conversations at times of tickets and conflicts. I am unable to find one , but i am considering a similar one that the police use . Since the time , i had one from the 113th precinct in queens , pry the window that was 3/4 of the way down and physically try to yank me out of the car for doing 50 in a 35 , i was only repeating wtf just write the ticket , then threatened me and more . Its best to beat them at their own game . if your wrong then your wrong but just as one said they make up laws as they go along .

What ever happened to Fun ?

    Damn,
Why did I have to read this? This reminds me of a few years ago (6 years) whenI got pulled over by a local wanna be state trooper. I got pulled over at around 130am because I had a burned out headlight. I answered the late 20 year old cop's answers correctly. I told him I had 2 beers back between 10-1130 for a late late dinner. He called me a liar and asked me to step out of the car. This is where things get F'ed up. First of all it's in the low teens outside and I have a very light jacket on(think windbreaker) and he has a nice heavey wool jacket on. I pass the touch the nose test, but fail the follow the light test, due to the fact I have twich in myright eye that has been dx by my Dr. The cop says your drunk and this test proves it, since any movement of your eyes like that proves your drunk hands down. By now i've been outside for about 15-20 minutes and i'm FREEZING. He says about when he was in Germany with the military that this weather was nothing and that i'm being a wimp. I failed the walk the line test due to being so cold and shivering. Maybe the chattering of my teeth made him realize i'm being frozen outside I asked if I could sit in my carand thaw out. He then patted me down so I could go sit my car and warm up and he can give me the breathalizer test. By now he is 100% sure i'm drunk and I'm 100% not drunk but pissed. HE pats me down and finds $1000 in 20's inmy pocket. Now I have to explain to him how I didn't get to the bank after work to made the deposit. Now he thinks I"m a drug dealer. How much worse can things get? I"m lucky I have my check book proving that I do in fact have a business. He then lets me sit in my car to warm up. I do the breath test the first time and blow a .00. I'm thinking F you, buddy. He then resets it to a more sensitive setting. I blow again and this time a I blow a .002 F you copper. He still insists i'm drunk so a another cop pulls up. He borrowed that breathalizer unit and I blow a .00 F you. The whole time i'm not ****** but I keep reminding him i'm not a liar and i'm not drunk. So FFFFFFFF him. Finally he lets me go since he doesn't have anything he can bust me on.
The sad thing is the next day a wrote a LONG ***** email to all of my friends, everyone was in my corner except 1. That 1 just happens to be a NY state cop. Just shows that they all stick together, they all think we're all criminals.

I Admitted once coming out of the Tunnel, he said did you have something to Drink I said yes a few hours ago, I asked him do you want to give me a breathalyzer ? he said no thanks for your honesty and have a good night.
a Cop can smell alcohol on you and they are trained to see if you slur your words or by the look in your eyes they can tell if your drunk.

I think that's right. I had a similar experience: dinner in the city then a long drive home to NJ. I was tired but not drunk. I made the mistake of stretching and managed to hit the steering wheel with my elbow. Quick wobble, no big deal. Except I wobbled right in front of a parked trooper. Who was training a rookie. Oy. Gave up my paperwork, no problem there. Have you been drinking? A couple of glasses of wine with dinner, about 3 hours ago (close enough). How many was "a couple"? Two (close enough). Out of the car for the field sobriety test. Recite the alphabet. I tear through it. (Afterward my wife says, Do that again. I couldn't.) Then the follow the light test. Cake. Back in the car, on our way, very polite on both sides. I wonder if I would have been stopped at all if the experienced trooper had been alone. Perhaps the senior guy was letting the rookie pick the cars to stop. If so, it was a good lesson not to assume too much about the driver from a snapshot of activity.
