What I have found to work best for metallic engine surfaces as well as brushed aluminum such as motorcycle exhaust it a tooth brush and Soft Scrub that you would use for washing dishes. Its the mechanical scrubbing action as apposed to a chemical that cleans it. Aluminum parts can be very sensitive to chemicals (ie Simple Green). When it dries it turns to a powder and any that splatters or drips in the process can be removed via compressed air. Just make sure its cool before you start :)
