THE VALUE OF 575 SUPERAMERICA

+1 At first I, too, was after the polished gate. But after test driving half dozen 550's, I found myself in a 575 F1. What was I thinking? The F1 rocks for what I use it for, easy and fun transport. Those who belittle the F1 may have never spent any time in one. If I get the urge for three peddles, there is always the Porsche in the garage (but I find that the cover hardly ever comes off that car anymore he, he)

 

Sir, I think you nailed it. Yep, you absolutely nailed it. Only thing better would be winding above the hills of Monaco, maybe with Princess Grace in the jump seat. We're talking about the joy of being alive and driving a great car.

Again, it is great to read such positive comments from someone with a lot of Ferrari experience. Despite what the bench racers may say, it is NOT about 0 to 60 times or "how fast will it go?"

No, it is all about the experience. It is all about being behind the wheel of a great car on a fantastic road on a beautiful day. The older you get, the more you treasure these experiences.

Absolutely nothing at all wrong with that. I think both 6-speed and F-1 should be offered. Nonetheless, long trips on interstate highways offer little in the way of "fun" with the exception of speed bursts. Cruise would be of benefit in that milieu. On the other hand, I am getting older and have developed a very bad arthritic left knee. I find it increasingly painful to drive manual transmission for any length of time. I am not ready to give it all up. I can still really enjoy the 575M F-1 every weekend. I'm not giving up my cherished horsey until they close the lid for the last time.

 

Accepting modern technology is difficult for some. I'm nearly a geezer but, I accept it. I am somewhat surprised that younger enthusiasts whom you would expect to be right on top of it, don't accept it. Being in touch with the "Horse" involves the whole body and mind, not just the feet. The F-1 shifts faster than I can and I come from the "muscle car" generation. In two years the F-1 will shift so fast you won't even notice it.

On the curvy roads, I devote my time to :
1. road ahead.
2. rearview mirror images.
3. guages.
4. curve entry and exit speed judgement.

On the highway, I am concentrating on the road ahead and everything else I stated save curves which are rarely an issue.

The F-1 allows me to be more, not less in touch with the car. My hands are more nimble than my feet. That's my take IMHO.

Do you think any or all of the Formula 1 drivers of today find the F-1 shifters boring and uninvolving?

 

In its December 1998 review of the 456M, Car & Driver complained that the absence of cruise control and heated seats in a $250K car was inexcusable!

 

What exactly did a buyer get in the HGTC package for $25K?

 

I think the biggest component was the ceramic brakes. others can fill in more details.

 

Stifer suspension , sport exhaust and Ceramic brakes.

 

I believe the suspension was the Skyhook continuously variable adaptive suspension

 

Was the skyhook a superamerica thing? I thought it was all 575's...

I have a written contract to purchase a SA right now. I did a lot of shopping. I flew to Dallas, Las Vegas Las Angeles and New York to look at cars

Hell with the air fare, I could have paid more for a car and stopped the process, but I love cars and can always find a way to combine business with these trips. (My way of taking a vacation without it seeming like a vacation to my bosses.)

On the car I have under contract, the owner has the car at the dealer getting some things repaired.

I believe that even the cleanest SA will sell for under $300K. Cars with less than 5,000 miles will be had for under $275K.

There are cars available near $250K right now.

 

Did you get it?

 

What are you basing this on? From my research I believe the threshold is more like 300k.

If you go to the thread on the "Prices keep on falling" you will see more information--and there is no need to repeat it.

The whole key on negotiating price is to -- to steal from Jerry McGuire -- "show them the money." If you go somewhere IN PERSON--meaning get on a plane and spend a little money--and if you can show the seller that you have the means to purchase the car, then you can get a very good price on a very nice car. To give you an example, I went to a place in Texas and looked at a car with less than 5,000 miles. I got to the dealer and pulled up my Charles Schwab account on his computer and showed him that I could buy the car. He was asking $349,000. I offered $250K. He countered at $275K. Read that again, he countered at $275K, but said that the price was good for only 5 minutes. I walked.

The other thing to do is to find a car on consignment or with a private seller instead of a dealer. These types of situations seem to involve a little more flexibility, because the person looks at the cash coming in--and sometimes is willing to take the price just to move the car.

There are only 2 cars where I got into serious negotiations and the seller kept its price above $300K. The first was with a car that an actor owns--he thinks his name adds $50K to the price and the second situation was in Las Vegas (NOT WYNN). The dealer in Las Vegas thinks he can wait on that guy who just hit a $3 million slot machine and will come in and pay any price. Frankly, that guy to me is buying a newer model or a Lambo--not a sophisticated car like a Superamerica.

 

If only I had have known of this killer move earlier and even worse is that I have seen the movie often and never thought of applying the strategy to buying a used Ferrari. I could have saved so much $ - the % you have saved applied to purchases that I have made leaves me gasping. I have wasted money all over the world with dealers who would have fallen over so easily if I had only thought to log on to my bank account at the dealer during the negotiation. It never even occurred to me. I am kicking myself black and blue.

 

I went there and do not see where it says the location of SuperAmericans for $250k.

I am not sure it is right for me to identify specific negotiations with private sellers. I believe that these negotiations were conducted in private and the seller has an expectation of privacy. However, you have a PM from me, and I can give more details if you want.

I see this $300k range as asked prices, usually 10-20% below for sales
