355 Door Speakers

I replaced mine with JL Audio components and a new Alpine head unit-----The door panels are not like a normal car---actually a pain to remove, not hard just alot of screws, nuts, etc...

 

Ditto on taking the door panels off. Look for threads on "355 speakers" and "355 regulator" (related to window regulator), that should get you to some threads on taking the panels off. Lot's of various screws and bolts...not hard, just a little time consuming.

 

Did you guys keep the same speaker wire or did you pull new ones through somehow?

I kept the same wires---the factory speakers are component type and not seperates..

 

The 348 panel comes off in four sections. The bottom piece is carpet covered and the piece above it comes off first. But again this is on the 348. There are aluminium trim mounted by 4 black screws on the latch side of the door. And then there is a screw holding the section on the hinge side. Then the panel section is held on by plastic clips that brake when you even look at them. Best bet is to get a parts diagram and that should help. As for the speakers, I installed Rockford-fosgate 6.5" seperates, the woofer in the door (don't use a foam enclosure and there is a factory watershield that can be re-used. The tweeter fits in the stock dash location and I put the crossovers in the console (again, the 348). Sounds ten times better. And an external amplifier makes an even better improvement. YMMV.

If you are careful and you pry open the panel you can replace the speakers without taking 100% off. Be sure when you buy new speakers you go with a shallow mount type speaker. I just installed some 6 inch Boston Acoustics in mine.

I cut out the back of the door panel where the speaker fits. You would never know unless you took the speaker out and looked down in behind it... Just enough to get a deeper/better speaker in the door. If you don't you are very limited to the kind and size of speaker you can install because the area is very shallow...Worked out fine and now my car is lighter!!

 

This may sound like a stupid question, but are there speakers in the doors of 355 Spiders?

 

In the next week or so I have to pull mine back off to add some Dynamat to knock down a rattle in there. I will do a writeup and pics of how the panel comes off...

Actually it would be alot easier to videotape it. I think I may set up the video camera and expalin what I'm doing as I go along. Then upload it to Youtube or Google,,I'll post the link when I am done....
